With Winter starting to thaw, #buds on trees are ripening. In this photo, the ornamental #pear tree is full of buds on its naturally curvaceous branches.
When it is a sunny day, I take that as my cue to inspect the yard a bit and find out if anything is amiss. A few unexpected things I am always expecting to find on a typical day like this.
A few branches cast away from the Serviceberry tree high above are decorating the area.
Mostly I find holes where squirrels had dug deep holes through the fluffy soil, and flicked it out to the sides.
In the winter, I let clover grow in the beds and let it spread. This year I have enough growing that I can choose to keep it as a low cover crop, or turn it into a green manure by cutting it all back and mix it into the beds.
Some of the plant tags were strewn about on the ground. This pot above used to have Corsican mint growing... used to. The other pot I think is where I harvested out some ginger root.
One of my pots was tipped over upside-down on the ground, because it was pushed off the deck. It was growing a wildflower called #Chicory that won't sprout for another year if I have to start over again from seeds. Fortunately, the green little shoots were still buried inside the pot. The screen I wired over it prevented the squirrel from digging them out. Good foresight on my part!
#Crocus flowers are continuing to bud. This is very gratifying! Instead of waiting an entire year for these flower, I only had to wait a few weeks after planting it.
My third grow bed/bag is still growing three #brusselssprouts plants. I might wait another week or two before I finish the final harvest on these. The compost bucket in front was overflowing the brim with old leaves from the Brussels Sprouts, and now it has sunk down about three inches. That's good! It means the slugs and bugs are working their mojo in there. Underneath, I have another bucket that catches all the fresh and old compost juices that trickles out through a small crack. In the spring I'm likely to get mutant tomatoes growing out from the goop of the top bucket.
If I get an X-Plant with godly powers, like the ability to communicate with me telepathically, I promise you my steem friends, you will the be the first to know.
Bonus Photo!
Finally I took a curve around the house to look in the garage. This is where I have been keeping a small basin filled with mucky water. I'm afraid the #waterlily I was growing in it might have died. My parents dumped all of the water out it at one point, and I discovered this about ten days later to my shocking surprise. Earlier they confessed they were worried the pine needles from the Christmas tree might have killed the plant. No big deal I said. They neglected to tell me they also dumped out the water!
Were they trying to kill the plant? I always feel like they are trying to get me to fail and give up gardening.
Hmmmm
After adding fresh water, I decided to keep it in the garage anyways. You never know what might happen in the spring.
I don't believe it! It's alive!
No, not the ugly plastic floating fake flower. Look in the middle.
New leaf sprouts are emerging from the root ball. That means I'll be able to enjoy watching birds play on the lily pads again this year. Thank goodness. This thing is a bird and wildlife magnet.
In my next garden update I will show you the greater war I am waging with my mother. Flowers vs. Fruit. Who will win?
For your final comment.....Fruit!! Always and definitely fruit!
Just dont spray the dandelions and you can have both!
This was a great #healthy-home 'thaw overview'. Thank you so much!!

Yeah, when my dad enters the yard wars, he is the unholy one who prefers to spray. He nuked the side yard, which is now infested with weeds trying to repair the damage done to the soil. I still can't convince him sprinkling powder on the moss is a bad idea. As far as flowers vs. fruit, I like to grow things we can eat free of chemicals, while my mother likes using flowers that are more decorative, and no maintenance. I think she is also trying to passively curtail my ugly digging in the ground by putting innocent flowers in my way.

Yep. Both these behaviours/preferences have been passively taught as "The Preferred" over the last 40-80 years. It will take time to re-teach healthier practices.

Nice! This is in some ways my favourite time of year. Nothing is declining at this time of year. Everything's either dormant, or freshly coming alive. All the green times are ahead of us. It's like the early days of youth : )
Good job capturing the essence of spring in a post.
My little cannasprouts are doing fairly well. Should have between 4 and 6 healthy seedlings in a few weeks, by current estimates!

Thanks for the update. Glad you found something of interest. How many did you plant initially?

I germinated 10. 1 was a dud, 1 sprouted but then just died.
Currently have 3 cute little seedlings and 5 "maybes". : )
Uploading an update now if you're interested!

Little tours like these are always fun! Thank you for sharing. Today in Missouri it was almost 60 degrees. I had a bee, yes a bee, harassing me thinking it was mid April! To me this winter has not been cold enough long enough. Our apples and pears have had the buds showing for weeks. I hope we don't a hard enough freeze after they wake up entirely to kill the potential crops this year. Although, the colder it is, the longer it is, the less mosquitos there will be this year.
Anyway, thanks again for sharing!

I know what you mean. Even worse, I just recently learned that certain fruits won't produce at all if they haven't had enough chill hours. Found this out from watching videos on growing grapes. I think apples also have to go through a certain number of cold days to build up enough energy for fruit.

Each variety has a different amount of chilling hours. It is a design feature to prevent them from blooming too early and getting frozen and losing that years fruit.
Never buy fruit trees from Big Box stores(Lows, HomeDeepo, WallyMards, etc), they could be sourced from a Zone Very different from yours. So...they will never be successful fruit producing trees. Buy from reputable (and knowledgeable nurseries)!
Peace

Thank you. I was so tempted to buy a cheap bare root item off the shelf because it was so cheap. The big nursery in town charges a bit more, but it is potted and probably grown locally.

yes they do but I am not sure how long it is. The ones which go dormant in the winter need stratified, as far as I know. I have about 50 hazelnuts in the freezer right now. Plan to leave them in another month. Believe they need 60 days of freezing temp.

One apple tree variety may need 300 chilling hours. While another apple variety needs 600 hrs in order to produce flowers (and thus, fruit).
Apples, plums, peaches, etc all have their own chilling hours. Actually...I'm guessing all trees maybe have their own specific chilling hours....including nuts and non-domesticated non-fruit trees. I can't say that I've ever actually thought about it that far before.

So glad someone more knowledgeable chimed in. That explains why a flowering tree or plant might not produce the first year after planting into a new environment.

But they don't adapt or change due to the environment. These chilling hours are selected for through "breeding" and hybridizing. It is in their DNA.
Occasionally an unsuited tree may fruit when the abnormalities of that year's weather permit, but generally a tree un adapted for a particular weather Zone will never produce well in that Zone.

Love the signs of spring :) Where are you located? Here in Nova Scotia we tend to get more winter in feb and march than in dec and jan so i'm feeling pretty envious to see those crocuses right now...

This is an unusual climate for the season, because we usually have to be careful of freezing temperatures sometimes as late as April. This year has had so much warm rain in the winter. Most of our low temperatures have been above freezing in January. I'm still curious if we are going to get a February freeze. I'm in the Pacific Northwest USA.
