The Bulbs Are Awake

though, must be shivering in the cold ...
quietly they send their shoots up through the sandy ground ...
must be speaking in whispers about how much they love the cold ...
"bury them late in October or early November", so I was told ...
"out shall they come before it's even Spring ...
bringing you beauties to behold" ...

Yes, the bulbs are awake in my garden and I've planted plenty of them. The thumbnail? Probably a result of them birds scratching the ground right after I've buried those.

0 (4).jpg

On my first year here, the bulbs were the first plants I've ever buried in my backyard. That time, my backyard was pretty empty and it was spacious but I'm not used to having more tiles than plants in my garden so I looked for something to add. Bulb it was!

0 (11).jpg

I arrived here in October and bulbs were on sale during those days. I bought some tulips and had to wait till it was early November so I could let them sleep 10 cm deep in the ground and wait till they sprout.

Some time a year later, I've managed to make a few friends and K (by the way K is just an alias I use to represent any of my friends here - it's short for "kaibigan" in Tagalog meaning - friend) often come and visit with either a daffodil, hyacinth or a grape hyacinth of different sort as a gift. It's culture here to bear a gift when it's your first time to get invited to someone's house or to visit a friend at his/her place.

Year after year, my bulb collection has grown. This year, I've added one more sort but am surprise that this has beaten them from budding.

0 (9).jpg

Can you guess which bulb plant each picture bears just by looking at their sprouts? 10% upvote for anyone who'd dare give it a try. Please guess just one and kindly specify which pic you are referring to. Again, JUST ONE!!! edit: If it's already been guessed your answer won't count anymore. Let the others have a chance, too! If you guessed more than just one of them I won't cast your comment an upvote. Let's see who's really reading all the way.

0 (7).jpg

Year after year, I'd move them from one place to another just because I've been adding plants in my garden and I will have to move them again. Do you think doing that would affect their growth and flowering behavior? 15% upvote to whoever could explain how and why you think so. Only answer that if you yourself are growing bulbs , thank you.

0 (13).jpg

Here's another question, last year, I've didn't cut the grape hyacinth's flowers cause I was pretty busy managing two gardens and just let it take its course. Some time late in August last year, I found out that they were bearing seeds. I've collected the pods and scattered a few in the front yard. No, I haven't seen any of them coming out yet that's why I've decided to ask here cause this is the first time I've encountered the seeds. I'm used to planting all of them from bulbs.

0 (14).jpg

Do you happen to know whether these grape hyacinth seeds would grow and how? 25% to anyone who'd be able to give me a tip on how to. I'd appreciate it if you put the source if you aren't any bulb grower.

0 (1).jpg

Is it Spring? I have no idea but as you can see it on the thumbnail, even the aphids are up despite the cold these days.

0 (2).jpg

This content's 100% mine. I took most of the pics with my Nikon D3400 + AF-P NIKKOR 18-55mm , those of the grape hyacinths with my Samsung Galaxy A3, 2016.

Oh yea... my bulbs are starting to pop too. Except freesias... those are far ahead and I already see tiny flowers buds. They bloom for me twice a year.

About the seeds. I never tried that. But if they get the good temperature they should I guess :P

Oh! What You have going on?! It's already Spring? They have all woken up: and these bulbs and sprouts flowers. Probably You have a warm earth. It does not freeze as we got a few inches in depth. I don't know the answers to Your questions, because we don't grow these plants. No experience. I would love to see that answer more experienced guys. With the pace of growth, I hope that soon I see Your flowers. @englishtchrivy , Thank You for share Your experience in gardening.

very very annoying

Has no answer but loves your photos.
It must be the spring that comes with you.

hahah thanks!
it's alright, so I guess, you're not gardening? how about Mrs. xpilar?

Hehe, yes, she has the green fingers and stands for the plate.
But I'm lucky to be involved when she is shopping for plants and allowed to choose a little.

aw! that's the best thing !

Onions bulbs are a healthy choice in foods.
I appreciate your post it's wonderful.

I think the plant's account grows very quickly

I can only pay, as long as you spend time, just to plant the onion, hopefully can be perfectly harvested

They will best leave them at least 3 years in the same place for a good development.
If you really have to move them, your soil must be moist and take a big clod with your bulb.
The best is to wait a little to have the most flowers possible, after you can divide them.

Do you hobby plant a plant ,, ??

It's a long time man .... May you get good results someday

Hopefully get a good result someday

Do not hesitate to ask me for advice on plants and shrubs.
I do it for free and with pleasure!

I left one more question at the bottom
have you any answer to that?

Excuse me I was cooking at the same time as reading your post!
Aphids often come out with a warmth, but they adore the bulbs that are buried deeper than other plants to feed mainly at the larval stage.
I shared a post yesterday for winter treatment for insects and diseases.
It is possible that they go out in the winter apart if there are very strong frosts.
Treated with white oil before blooming.

it's alright but actually that was not the last question ;)

The best time for these seeds is to keep them in a dry place, and put them in February if the weather is good, or month march.

Some years you spend planting the crop ... ??

Hai @englishtchrivy, I am not a plant expert, but I will give you a link about the hyacinth plant you need, but this link should be translated into English.

Hopefully this can answer your question. thanks

Wow! We're still deep in winter here, but these photos of spring are so lovely! Okay, I guess that the second photo are crocuses... as for uprooting and bringing your bulbs with you when you move, perhaps it would be a little harder on their growth, but since you obviously appreciate them so much, I think they would be happy to be with you and so will grow with more beauty and vibrance because they are loved. :)

it's already been guessed sorry
but thanks for guessing anyway

Aha! So it has. Fun game, though. :)

Well I aint an expert in this forte ,So pass for now !But they do seems to be great plants though !

Not having a green thumb, I have no idea what you're talking about, but reading it relaxes me. "K is just an alias I use" was the most interesting tidbit to me, the sharing of an inside joke. Cute idea.

I wish I could get my wife to join here. You and her would be best buddies quickly. She also prefers plants over tiles, and loves schlepping the dog and me to the garden center with the first sunray of each year:

Please don't upvote this comment. You're more generous than my VP can stand to return. I took advantage of a tiny little dippy, but it's slow going ;-)

thanks
keep trying, she'd cave in eventually anyway :)
never push her to join
just encourage her
good luck!

I never tried it ..
But this is a gardening experience. I'm reading it :)

everybody needs a hobby and i think gardening is the best...

This needs patience
you do good work !!!

My fingers are nowhere near green, not even a bit. Okay my oregano is doing great, it even survives winter.

Although winter... Nature must be confused by the weather. Them sprouting kind of outta season is still a bit weird though.

Only thing I could think of when I saw the photographs of the bulbs was: "Tulips?"

And my guess is that not any of them is. ;-)

Plants can be moved, but I think that has to be done in october. Now I did move quite a few in different months, no problem what-so-ever. Except that they all died.

No, just kidding. Never got that october thing, but maybe I just understood it wrongly?

Knowing myself a bit I would say that last part...

aw! that's good news!

yeah.. tulips idd...
the dying part is what am worried about so I haven't moved it but the new green house requires more space so I will have to eventually sighs.. I hope they survive anyway :(

Hope they survive too Ivy.

I think that's calla lily. Looks very similar to all the pictures.
Also, which month do they finish growing? I don't remember.

which picture are you referring to?

3rd, 4th, 5th

hmmm... you have to read the instruction again ;)

that's a second chance don't waste it
now try again ;)

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

i told you not to waste the chance
next time, read the whole post
I always give clear instructions
I'm sorry but because you tried guessing it I'll give you a 1% up

haha, I'm an idiot lol. Well, thank for the 1%, not to mention I learned quite a lot about bulbs while researching, so that's like a 100% to me!

you're welcome
would you please remove that link you posted up on your comment? I didn't check the link but in case it gives clue I'd like to give others a fair chance
thank you

hello dear @englishtchrivy

Ah... the ones that used to cost more than a house.
Wonder what colour this will turn out.

I love your photos. They remind me of my garden in Canada. I also had Hyacinths and Crocus. Also Snowdrops...they were the first flowers. Tulips and daffodils later.
