New kid on the block

Look what I found when grocery shopping!
It happens that the one of the supermarket have very cool cacti from time to time. This is not a usual one and I was actually waiting for the tho show up.

Astrophytum ornatum 3.jpg

Astrophytum (ornatum?) - that is his name. Among all the other spiky cousins there was only one like that. Could I leave it behind? Hell no!

He is cute.
And he is twisted :)

And has pretty furry spots.
Broken spines is not my fault. The shops usually are not very careful with the little ones and often the get those broken. But he will be fine. New ones are already growing.
Soon he will get a new pot with pretty pebbles on top and will get adjusted to sun slowly. Then he will live outside with other cacti.

Astrophytum ornatum 6.jpg

Fun fact: He can withstand temperatures to -10 degrees C!
And he will not bloom for next few years apparently. I read that usually they start to bloom at the age of 7. So no flowers for me. But that's ok. He is pretty as it is.

I love the idea behind it, great colors! Clever stuff!

Thank you! :D

Indeed a beauty! I also have small cactus collection. About 7 or so..do not need maintenance..still waiting for flowers though..

Yeaaa they are super easy to care as long as they don't get too much water :)
Hope they bloom for you soon.

You know I bought a round cactus..Very round. Strange, when it grew bigger it grew elongated..hahaha

Hahah he didn't want to be round anymore :D

Hahaha..it is growing tall but weird...!

Beautifully exotic looking.

Yep. Quite a cool shape :)

LOL looooove your headline LOL & got to love the pun about IT being a 'he' awsomepoints !!!

Obviously it is a HE :D

were we ever thinking IT was a she?? :P

Nop :D

Congratulations!
Very beautiful and excellent photos!
I have such a cactus :-))

Thank you!
Did it bloom for you already?

No, I have not bloomed yet.
Although its diameter is 9 cm without spines. Other my Astrophytums are smaller in diameter.
One Astrophytum (it does not have thorns) in diameter 8 cm - it has already blossomed 2 times. Later I will post his photo. His flower is fragrant !!!

I read they have to be big to bloom. This one is very small still..
I will have to wait a long time! :D

Time quickly runs. :-))

Better than buying sweets on the way out :P

Haha Right? :D

Awwwww... a new member of the family!! Welcome, welcome... :)
Furry polka dots.... cool!! :D

Yeaaa he is the baby now :D
Those dots are so softy and furry... very very tiny, but like suede. So nice :D

I see them! :) Should have bigger furry spots... then you can pet them! Lol...

I have one big furry spot. And she has spines and needles too :P

That are some impressive shots!

Thanks a lot Bart :)

You found really pretty one. I like it very much.
Just do not put soil on its neck. There you should put only stones. It is sensitive to water on that part of the body.
It will be more pretty every year, you'll see. :)

I will keep that in mind, thanks!
I read they are very prone to rot. Some even cut off that tap root when they are young, so it doesn't have a chance to rot. Not gonna do that though!

It is like a hunting game.. among dozens and dozens of small pots one was like this :)

I keep my Astros (except asterias) on rain. So they are not so root prone (like Ariocarpus, Turbinicarpus... and some others very sensitive) if they are in mineral and when it is warm/summertime. But the neck has to be protected from soil!

Out of curiosity... how often do water the other regular types that grow outside in the summer?
I know it depends on many factors...

No rain for Asterias?
