How to prevent Deer eating your daylilies

in gardening •  8 years ago

Today, I had the first and last bloom of the season of this daylily:

The reason is, every other bloom on this daylily was eaten by some deer. For my garden, I have a 7' deer fence, but not for my entire yard which I've decorated with Daylilies that I've been collecting over the last 12 years. I have over 35 variety now, and I'd like to see them bloom.

When Deer come around, they can create quite a bit of carnage like:

If you see your daylilies looking like that, then you've been deer attacked. My solution for this is a spray that is made locally to me, I Must Garden Deer spray.

This deer spray works great, but you need to re-apply after a rain. I was out of town and it must have rained, I came back to some carnage. Honestly, with the amount of blooms I have ready on my daylilies, the damage was fairly minimal. This one in the top of my blog was the worst damage, but at least I've got one bloom from it remaining.

My advice is, this spray is worth the money. If you have a vegetable garden, I probably wouldn't use it on your produce, but on flowers, this works awesome!

I hope you have success in warding off the deer population. Happy Gardening!

Looks like a Star fish in the deep sea

I have a deer problem also. I put up an electric fence and no more deer!
I like daylilies and have a few different ones

They come in herds here.

Very intresting :)

Thanks! And thanks for stopping by.

I love to garden, mostly veggies and herbs. I don't have a deer problem, my problem is crazy ants, they are industrious.

I Must Garden makes an all natural Ant Control that works great! http://www.imustgarden.com/natural-ant-control-kills-repels

Awesome. I'll have to try that if I get ants.

Thanks snapjack. Followed you.

I hope they aren't fire ants, those things suck.

No, they actually called crazy ants. They are tiny and don't bite but they are everywhere and will mess up your garden. I'm in Louisiana.

Absolute worst pests but a really industrious species and probably the most dominant on earth!

I hope you find something to get rid of them. Ants can definitely be destructive.

Diatomaceous earth helps, and I also found an all-natural spray that works better than anything else I have tried. It is called Eco-smart Ant and Roach Killer if anyone else has a problem with ants or roaches. By the way, love daylilies too.

Aw! That one surviving lily is really pretty! A pity the deer deprived you of the rest. @florio

That's ok, I'm super glad I got to see one (especially since we moved here two years ago I still don't have memorized what's where. We transplanted our daylilies from the old house and I just randomly placed them). There was one daylily that I didn't see the blooms for two years until I found this spray.

I'm glad you found something that works!

Sorry to hear about your garden.

No worries! It was just the daylilies. Luckily, my deer fence is keeping them out of the garden, so no damage there. :-)

Why dont ypu tey leaving out some food for the deer so they ignore the flowers?

There's too many deer and also daylilies are like filet mignon for deer.

I'm about to declare a summer deer season. I have found that using fishing line around the garden has kept them out. Of course something else is getting in and digging everything up, but at least the deer are staying out now. As for the lilies, I had one tiger lily but the deer got it. I need the spray.
