What will happen to my garlic?

in gardening •  7 years ago

I had some garlic that was about to go bad so I took the cloves and I planted them in the dirt.

It has only been a few days and you can see the roots have grown like crazy

I grew garlic one year. I did it all wrong so I only got the original bulbs I planted. I planted them too close together. I didn't fertilize them.

Yours look nice and healthy and the soil looks good. You should get nice fat bulbs! There are lots of articles about when to harvest garlic, I think it's when the leaves start turning brown.

so the clove will turn into a full bulb again?? i'm pretty excited to see how it turns out! thank you for sharing your gardening wisdom with me:)

Yes! It should make a whole new head of garlic. A new head for each clove (bulb) you plant. This can take some time. (Usually you plant it in the fall, but it should still be okay now.) When you harvest it be sure to let it dry out a little before storing it. The traditional way is to braid the green stems then just pluck the heads from the braid as you need them. (Here's a pretty good video on how to do that --

(But it looks nicer if you end with twine or raffia.)

(See, I know about garlic - I just can't grow garlic!)

great video thank you for sending this to me, it's growing out of control right now haha
