The Iris of Golden Oak Farm

in gardening •  7 years ago

The main iris bed had not been weeded since 1999. Our WWOOFer Nate helped me renovate it in 2013. In 2014 I had 2 flowers, both the yellow type. I have an abundance of the light/dark purples. I'll have to trade some of them for other colors. I got a yellow flag in 2015, but no photos yet.

This old fashioned variety is called Honorabile, dating from1840.

Blue flag iris. No one told it that it only thrives is damp areas....

3rd Section - white iris crop May 2015.jpg

These large white iris are probably White Reprise from 1984. That was the first year I had iris, and these were those first ones.

7th Section - pale purple-deep purple iris crop May 2015.jpg

This variety is "Perfection" introduced in 1880.

7th Section - pink and purple iris crop May 2015.jpg

This may be the variety "Armageddon" introduced in 1992

7th Section - small light blue, dark purple iris crop May 2015.jpg

This variety may be "Alcazar" introduced in 1910.

I also have yellow flag in the 3rd garden but it’s a recent acquire and I haven’t gotten a photo of it.

I used to have a nice selection of iris. They are great flowers.
Thanks for sharing yours with us @goldenoakfarm!

  • One year Mom helped me clean and freshen up the iris bed west of the cellar house. I don't know how we did it, but we only ended up with 2 out of over a dozen varieties. haha OOPS!
    • I've never tried the Siberian because I don't have a damp place. Hmm Looks like maybe will have to add them to my list...

The Siberian definitely do not have a damp place and have lived there for the best part of 20 years...
