Greenhouse Update For October First! Market Season Is Officially Here

in gardening •  8 years ago

We always hope to be at markets by October 1st, didn't happen this year but we are looking at Oct. 4th as our official first market! If all goes as planned we will be at Rice University Farmer's Market in Houston! If your a Rice Student come on over and say Hi!

Looks like this year the Roma tomatoes were a good call, they are going gangbusters so we should have a load to take. They are a sprawling mess in the greenhouse, it takes everything I have not to wade in there and start trimming...but that's not the way these beauties work!

Check out my post on the difference between determinate and indeterminate tomatoes here:

Anyway like I said, the Romas look great, I have another round of seeds being planted this week. We will probably only be able to pick these for about three weeks, but you never know in the greenhouse!

The Geronimo tomatoes are coming along, they will have a few for us to take to the market, soon they will be the most productive plants in the greenhouse. Our few weeks of fall like weather has come, so with the cooler temps in the greenhouse everything will start getting the second wind and hopefully take off like a rocket ship.

The Yellow Brandywines are starting to color up, not enough for this week, but soon my friends, soon. No color yet on the Cherokee Purple but they are loaded, might be the best crop of them yet.

The lettuce, basil and arrugula are coming along, they really need to move, I have another tray seeded and ready to go on the table but I am almost out of room.

@Papa-Pepper's Stuff

If you have been following the saga of @papa-peppers seeds to produce story, the Kiwanos have finally started putting on some fruit. I was getting a little worried because the vines were soon to take over the back end of the greenhouse. @papa-pepper told me they would make some vines, but I didn't think it would be this many!  He also sent me some Chinese Noodle Beans and they are coming along, I probably needed a few more buckets worth to get enough for more than one market but we will see how they go now that it's cooled off a bit.

Experimental Stuff!

Every year I try out some stuff that you wouldn't expect from in a greenhouse, last year I did some garlic and onions in the grow system, turned out ok, but you would need to do them as your only crop to make a decent amount. I grew corn first year, great looking stalks, and since corn is wind pollinated we got half ears. Anyway this year the experimental crop is watermelons and a few Israel Melons. The Israel melons did pretty good outside last season, so I thought I would try a few indoors to see how that works. The watermelons are doing well and have already put on some fruit. Guess we will see how this works too. I got seeds for a few smaller varieties to try Sugar Bush and Sugar Pot, both varieties are supposed to be a little more compact and not so viney...if that's a word. So far so good though.

Ok folks, that's going to do it for this week, I will post a few stories from the markets in a few day hopefully! That reminds me, folks, if you're able, get out and support your local farmer. They grow the best, tastiest cleanest food available. Hit up your local farmer's market's, talk to your farmer. Anyone who is worth their salt will be willing to answer all your questions about their product! Be an informed buyer, and for goodness sake stop eating all that grocery store crap they are trying to pass off as healthy!

OK i'm off the soap box now!

Until next time, Keep Growing!

I am glad to see the Noodle beans doing so well. Harvest them when they are between 12" - 18", before the seeds really start to form. They are best stir-fried, so saute some in a little butter and see what you think. The less energy the vines put into making the noodle beans 3 feet long with fully developed seeds, the more energy they can put into making more for you.

Roger that!
Gonna try some soon!

GREAT! We like them!

Superb garden and istalation too @jed78! I can actually say that you have a laboratory and not a garden there.

Lab for a mad scientist i guess! Thanks for looking, more coming soon!

OOOH. Dang... when I grow up and have space, I wanna get a greenhouse like that! And this weekend makes me wish so much that it was possible to go down to Houston for several different events. One is that Merriwether posted about Houston Arboretum having a sale with Toothache Trees and Pawpaws among other things. I've got some serious plant lust going on.

Is the toothache tree the one with the spines on the trunk? My granddad called them tickle tounge trees if that's the same one I'm thinking of!

yeah it has big thorny things on the trunk i think thats the one..makes your mouth numb
oh yup tickle tongue is listed in the names(i like the sound of that one) so thats it for sure.

Nice looking tomatos . Organic is the way .

Yep, gotta grow the good stuff or people won't buy it!
