Growing My Garden Week #2!

in gardening •  7 years ago

Will plants grown in our gardens dynamically produce the nutrients we need the same way a mother's milk is customized to the baby? According to the book Whole by a medical doctor specializing in nutrition, our bodies are like factories that dynamically process every ingredient meaning what we put in and how our bodies process it are equally important.

Meanwhile, nutrients in fruits and vegetables can vary as much as 40 times from one to another. This means while the label might say 6 mg of vitamin C in an apple which equals about 10% of our daily value, one apple might have 1 mg of vitamin C while another on the same tree may have 40 mg. The apparent cause of this is that the plants attempt to produce exactly what the person growing them needs the same as a breastfeeding mother's body automatically does the same with the baby!

This research combined with my mother in law gardening and consistent advice for me to "go outside" motivated me to start my own garden as I wrote about in my first post documenting my journey into gardening! My greater vision is to grow a significant portion of our own food as a part of living a life in this body filled with joy and health for 150+ years! Will you continue the journey with us as we see what is new this week in my garden because maybe reading this post will spark and fuel a passion for gardening?

When I said in the last post I was a complete beginner, that means I have a lot of supplies to buy to even get my garden started. After making a beginning with grow bags the previous week, I dive into all types of plant seeds at Home Depot based on what a calendar online says I can grow in Saint Petersburg, Florida!

IMG_0341.jpg

The seeds are incredibly cheap at about $3 a package with enough to make hundreds of plants!

IMG_0340.jpg

I prepare at home by setting up more grow bags and Home Depot buckets which I since learned are not food grade ...

IMG_0336.jpg

The kale plant in the middle was a gift from @laurabanfield's mother and one I paid little attention to until last month!

IMG_0337.jpg

During multiple trips to Home Depot's gardening center, I load up on organic garden soil despite having learned since that what I really need is potting soil ...

IMG_0342.jpg

I load 10 of these into the backseat of my Toyota Corolla!

IMG_0344.jpg

And carry them all about 50 yards at home!

IMG_0346.jpg

All this new soil helps me add buckets with carrots, onions, and broccoli!

IMG_0347.jpg

Madeleine loves gardening with her nana which was a big part of my motivation to start the garden because we now get to do this together!

IMG_0350.jpg

Pretty much the same picture as above. I took a photography course and am not sure I learned anything.

IMG_0354.jpg

The spinach plants are still alive from last week!

IMG_0355.jpg

No dog poops in the garden thanks to this fence!

IMG_0356.jpg

We planted broccoli in these.

IMG_0357.jpg

Amazing how fast the gardening area is filling up!

IMG_0358.jpg

Planted lots of kale in the black grow bags without following the instructions on the label which stated the kale needed to be further apart.

IMG_0359.jpg

Back to Home Depot for more soil where by dumb luck or unconscious incompetence I grab the potting soil!

IMG_0360.jpg

Well some of it was potting soil ...

IMG_0361.jpg

Remember the white picket fence above separating part of the yard to keep the dogs out? @laurabanfield bought that for about $350 and put it together. I decided to try and build one for less ...

IMG_0362.jpg

It seemed like a great idea until ...

IMG_0363.jpg

I was surprised to learn how difficult it is to nail stakes in standing up and gave up on the crossbars after the first section turned out to be a royal PITA.

IMG_0364.jpg

Here we see the task at hand and regret our choices especially when I could afford the nice fence ...

IMG_0365.jpg

Nevertheless I pound all the stakes in and get a functional fence up.

IMG_0366.jpg

Success! No dogs in this part of the yard and now a huge amount of space for a garden!

IMG_0367.jpg

This fence is a good analogy for how I have built my entire business online ...

IMG_0368.jpg

Bottom line is for under $100 it works as intended despite no experience building fences!

IMG_0369.jpg

In the next week's gardening post, we will see the expansion of new grow bags into this side of the yard! I appreciate the huge upvotes from @hasoon, @nikolai, and @teamsteem on the last week's post which helped me pay for the supplies alongside the top comments by @nearbird, @eco-alex, and @modemser!

Thank you for joining me on this adventure and I hope what we saw here today is useful for you!

Hey Jerry do you have videos teaching Steem it? I’d like to learn how the bots work and some other stuff

http://steem.guide has the best collection of my Steem tutorials!

Congrats @Jerrybanfield you picked a great time to start your garden, I'm getting ready to start mine back up now that spring is near. Here's a little tip from Club Tampa Bay, well water and rainwater work the best. So if things start looking droopy check your water. Your post was featured this week in Club Tampa Bay!

Your off to a good start!

I really recommend you get into sprouting broccoli sprouts.
They are 100 times healthier than broccoli and 2x more healthy when frozen. You can sprinkle them on a salad or put them in shakes...you can sprout a lot in just a few days and would be a great addition to your healthy garden.
I got all this info from Dr Rhonda Patrick seen here with the broccoli sprouts (looks like something else lol)

I love broccoli.
Need to check if and why the sprouts are healthier, and how to grow them.
The problem is, for most people the space needed to grow stuff is more expensive than buying them.

this video is where I got my info from and answers all your questions

Truce: Now you already know what im about to say

Duce: DONT

Duce: i mean DON'T*

Truce: what?? they look like bags of cole slaw :)

I think this is a good suggestion. Some thing that takes just few days to grow is a good thing. Usually it would take months to grow broccoli. At small scale won't be sufficient for whole family.

This is awesome @ssjsasha. I thought you were holding weed at 1st. I almost fell in love for a second there. I appreciate this, because last year my folks were growing brocs and they were so fresh..

@ssjsasha thank you I will learn more about broccoli sprouts and Dr Rhonda Patrick!

This is the actual video where I got all my facts, to save time I listen/watch videos at 1.25, 1.5 or 2x the speed...but rhonda patrick talks fast and just keeps spitting out knowledge like you wouldnt believe

Nice. Looks like a lot of work. Hopefully you get a fruitful crop.

It just goes to show how much work and energy goes into growing the food we all take for granted at the supermarket. Especially so if people are consuming animal products. They are VASTLY less efficient when it comes to calories produced per kwh/or litre of fuel used. Crazy stuff.

Nick

Exactly Nick! Thank you for reminding me that I forgot to mention how much growing my own food helps me appreciate how much others do in growing most of what I eat for me!

We used to have a garden in our backyard and it was so refreshing to see. I really want to have it again

hey I just noticed that you mentioned me here, and i'm quite happy for that.
I just hope that your system is working well and that you took in to consideration aquaponics controlled by RaseberyPi or other small computers

Is it just me @jerrybanfield or does it look like the Dogs could just Jump over the Fence ???

They did dig through it once already which I will mention in the week 3 update!

Wow, you must be some where really warm. Im currently in Florida and I don't even think it would be warm enough to plant something here right now.

I am in Saint Petersburg Florida where it is pretty warm here!

Oh cool. Im currently in Jacksonville, not as nice as St. Pete!

amazing
I am myself planing to do a little gardening (but no way near your scale)
I hope I get success because I really find gardening kinda interesting now adays
wish me luck! :)

Looks great @jerrybanfield!

Gardening, a thing that is done since the dawn of time. Part of my family in the countryside grow all the vegetables specific to our regiin and sells them to markets and hipermarkets. It is much better to know that you grow them under the sun with no chemicals to help them grow.
One piece of advice, if to be considered: most of the seeds we buy to grow are not the natural ones, they are produced in labs and when they grow the lack the taste.
But this something else :)
Happy gardening and healthy food for life!

Congratulations @jerrybanfield, it's looking great! I'm trying to make the move to much healthier foods, and seeing you with projects like this has inspired me even more!

This is unrelated, but I would really like to talk to you about some marketing campaigns, incubators and more that I have been looking to implement on Steemit. You already run a hugely succesful campaign fundraising page @budgets, and I do not want to go in competition with that as I feel combining efforts is what is most important on Steemit. I have a lot of experience in marketing and feel that the program I am putting together could really help Steemit grow a lot. Is there any way that I can contact you to talk more about this? Again sorry for the unrelated paragraph, but I searched your website and couldn't find an email address!

What a nice post.....thanks for share @jerrybanfield (73)

It looks like you and Madeliene will have a complete blast watching this garden grow and the greatest reward is not going to be the delicious vegetables, its going to be the memories you two will have. Seems funny talking about gardens when it 10 degrees here in Pittsburgh Pa...lol

great work and i would like to see your grown veggies in future.
Cheers!

I'm looking forward to seeing the things your garden produces. We finally managed to finish our backyard after 2 years of renos. Can't wait to get the garden planted again...nothing quite like fresh veg mid summer.

Jerry, I'm starting to think you are actually a comedian. You style of videos and posts don't fail to make me laugh. Thank you and wishing you a great garden!

if about baby we should really keep it, good post friends.

I love plant the vegetables, too.I often plant by seeding and small trees from the tre market.
Here is my garden. We could share the tips about it as well.
https://steemit.com/blog/@lenancie/blog-4-we-eat-what-we-grew-healthy-living

It is definitely going to be a good start jerry but you won't be able to grow significant portion of your food on this small land. Still something is better than nothing.

If you need more seeds the team at Rebel Gardens would be happy to hook you up. Let me know!

Good luck on the garden, the more I learn about gardening the more important I think it is for everyone.

Awesome that you are growing your own food! We have also started to look at growing our own vegetables and fruit. We started with our papaya seeds which started to sprout and this weekend we are looking to pot some vegetables like choy sum and kailan here in sunny Malaysia! Will be following your progress! Looking forward to see you harvesting them!

Makes me want to make one myself.

Brax,

Act on that idea! Get a few pots and bag of soil. Better yet - if you have a yard, use the topsoil. If you are unsure of it's quality, have the soil tested for toxins and heavy metals. I didn't mention it directly to Jerry, but I'm not sure why he is potting all his plants instead of using the soil directly. Maybe he can enlighten us all!

Cheers,
Nick

really cool garden @jerrybanfield. It looks like a lot of work. I aspire to grow a few things on my balcony but haven't gotten around to it yet. But, are you saying that you are hoping that the theory of a plant producing what the grower needs is what happens? I would be interested to know but how will you test it?

Hey CFL!

Growing a garden is only as much work as you allow it to be. Jerry obviously has a yard bigger than a
balcony, and he is utilising more of it than he could have chosen to. The larger the space, the more work -- unless of course, you're trying out permaculture methods that reduce the need for inputs and don't require as much water.

Get that balcony garden growing! Even if you only have a few hours of sunlight on it every day, you can get some herbs growing! It is SO satisfying. Grow the herbs and veggies that you already eat. Maybe start with some easy growing leafy greens, parsley and basil. I'm not sure where you're from, so have a look at what is in season for you.

Cheers,
Nick

Thanks for sharing post sir... I follow you from the beginning...

Very precious!

Jerry!

Awesome gardening project, bud! I've been a huge advocate for home gardening for years and run the school gardening club. The more pressure we take off large scale agriculture, the better. It is also a better use urban areas than just keeping them as lawn or concrete. These places need to be productive and serve an essential service (cleaning air, collecting fresh water or producing clean food).

The balcony we have is used to grow mainly chillies and herbs. Having a fresh supply of parsley, basil and mint is essential for our cooking! I use all of those in my green smoothies daily, also.

Keep up the terrific work and tell us all about your achievements and pitfalls!

All the best,
Nick

The best way to get organic food at home...👍resteemed the post...👌

the sweet boy made his garden more passionate, the spirit extraordinary

yes of course I myself also like gardening, I think gardening is a very interesting thing because we can plant itself and take the results for himself can even be sold. and of course the garden is very beautiful because it is full of plants, let alone gardening in the cool mountains is very remarkable

Superbbb. Here is also Spring coming. In the First days of March, we are going to plant some new plants. Flowering plants and fruits plants. Gardening is a relaxing job. Sometimes I advise my friends. If you want to release your tension and stress. do Gardening. anyhow thumbs up for this post. keep entertain us like that. stay blessed <3

Those black growing bags are a great idea! I've been unsuccessfully looking for a similar solution for quite some time, in order to grow some more vegetables in my garden. I have a huge garden with no basic "real estate optimization", with many trees that leave only a few sunny spots in some places, so that's where i intend to use those bags...Thanks!

post is good, what is consumed means it is processed, if the raw material is good means will produce a good, thank you @jerrybanfield

They will grow i do this same thing every year, it looks fine and im pretty sure the ground is fertile because of the dogs you know, same thing with my yard because of my husky and just remember when they start to grow dont water them during the hot day water them at night we the sun goes down and also before the sun comes up i do this and my get so big its crazy. I had eggplate, cucumbers and zucchini as big as my leg. Thanks for sharing this with the community

Just imagine becoming the way you used to be as a very young child, before you understood the meaning of any word, before opinions took over your mind. The real you is loving, joyful, and free. The real you is just like a flower, just like the wind, just like the ocean, just like the sun. Don Miguel Ruiz

Oh shit!! Jerrys in the garden!! Watch out!! Just so all of you know, growing your own food is one the best skills a man or women can have. Jerry, Sing to those plants! Good job Jerry!

Hey! I was wondering why you don't grow them directly in the ground and tend to use those pots?

Hello @jerrybanfield! a garden of veggies is also a nice investment, keep up the good work! God bless, share some when all of your plants bear fruits or veggies, goodluck.

I love gardening, but dont know how to go about it, see how far you have gone, starting as a beginner and now a master😁.
This is great, and meanwhile, that kid standing on there looks just like you and is cute💝

Gardening is also my hobby. The follower is the beauty of nature..So, we all should grown-up garden each & every person.Carry on your creativity & activity.I expect your plan must be succeed.
Thanks.
@Resteem & follow has been done.

I'm so inspired Mr @jerrybandield. I'm getting green tonight. In the rural we have grapes growing an Feb is the seaso. If you're ever in South Africa hala and i can show you some of the freshest gardens we got on the rooftops of CDB's. Thanks for the epic post my sir..

Nice work Jerry!!!
Good to see so many people on here giving growing their own food :-)
Just remember "organic" additions to your soil/media require soil life to take the "organic material" and turn them into plant available nutrients :-)
HAPPY GARDENING!!!!!

It seems to be a good hand

i love reading your post because you are always practical while posting wanting to make every reader understand what you are writing about.
Gardening is a practical Work that fills one mind with joy especially when your plants are growing well.
I wish to own a garden some day.
Thanks Jerry.
Keep it up.

@joysunshine thank you for helping me understand why you enjoy reading the post because I was able to experience your joy with the comment you left!

@jerrybanfield
Great to see more and more people going back to growing their own food, I started about a year ago, and really started out as just a trial, and more of a hobby, but i have since managed to cultivate a relatively sustainable source of food for myself and family.

I used some seeds and others veggies I just planted from left over good quality produce. I am amazed at how easy it was, I now do not buy any veggies or herbs as I have enough in my garden to supply me and some extra to give away to family and friends.

Good luck with your new venture, I think if everyone just started doing this and stopped relying so heavily on supermarkets to supply us we could have a much happier, healthier and cheaper style of living.

I have few posts of my Homegrown efforts, you can check it out here: https://steemit.com/food/@michaeljn/homegrown-food-harvest-4-bowl-of-veggies-potato-under-achiever-yum

apologies for plugging a post here, but I get very excited when I see a fellow homegrower :-)

stay blessed... and happy growing...

You have received an upvote from @livesustainably. I promote and curate content that encourages and educates others in living sustainably.

Are you telling me that your dogs can't jump over that fence. I think your awesome dogs could dig under it as well. I have feeling all your work is going to be undone. I think you will be left crying in the corner in less than one week.

Well good luck and yeahh, good luck :)

i send you 5 SBD and you upvote me 2.5 SBD. why?

Very good @jerrybanfield

Postingan yang bagus dan luar biasa
Good job

good idia

I really love your initiative but what is even better that you show Madeleine how to so this and involve in the process!

@jerrybanfield you are our actual hero of the planet. You are growing plants like a mother does. It is a great step. I am very motivational with you. I love to grow plants. Very soon I am also going to start a campaign for Green. Thanks for sharing your valuable moments with us.

Wow, very beautiful garden, a lot of work but will pay in the end. I like how you documented everything with pictures so well.

Very good my friend @jerrybanfield, your post is very interesting and you teach us the importance of the plants. And I think we must to teach our children to plant, take care the plant because they provide the nutrients that we need.

yeah! i will grown plants on my gardein

Sir. it's very informative .I like it .you blog generous my idea
Thank you

you have done an excellent job :) let your garden grow and prosper!

I started a container garden and I love it! Unfortunately I live in Chicago I can’t begin growing up here until at least late May 😢. I found using regular containers was too hard for me to keep consistently watered. I ended up buying special containers called grow boxes which have a resovoir at the bottom and my garden was incredible. The growth was insane. You should check them out!

What a magnificent post sir :):) Thanks for sharing us

@upvoted

I like the containers!! I need to start my garden soon!

i know jerry you are not sure what you learned, but truly i learned that we can learn too many things from our ancestors........

Gardening can give you a sense of accomplishment!

You have worked hard to create sustanance and have given back to the Earth in a most generous way.

Add family and you can have an experience that will be a lasting memory in ypung minds.

JGV

well thats good for your hobby and i am new...i want to know is this kinda hobby for you?? @jerrybanfield

Madeleine sure likes it !Nice work done buddy ;)
Jerry wanted to know about the delegation process of 500 SP to you !

@jerrybanfield your going to need a bigger garden really soon. Is that your daughter? Super cute!

There is a whole large community of gardeners into the container gardening side of things, so there is a lot you can delve into. Anyone who gardens gets a big green thumbs up. :D

p.s I left a msg elsewhere but am grabbing the opportunity now too because as a guest-finder for @pennsif's new Alternative Lifestyle radio show I am scouting for guests to come on each week for a short segment. What you are doing would fit in very well. Please let me know, if this is something you would be interested in participating in, thanks. :)

Btw, I loved your attempt at fencing! Looked a lot like mine, lol.

Hey Jerry great documentation! I got to say I love your positive outlook and spreading the love I've been getting into gardening myself but it's winter time here now in Bucksport Maine my fiance and I haven't done much since last summer and we're still learning as well. I think this is something I'm going to try. I pray the rest of us can post content that will be as helpful to you.

Great to see your taking steps to growing your own food!
It is true that food that you grow in your own garden is far healthier than food at a store. It is also true that it is far more sustainable.
Though its also true that buying corporate soil and seeds in bags are no where close to as healthy or sustainable as making your own soil and harvesting or acquiring wildcrafted seeds.

If you ever need any gardening or sustainability tips, like how to turn lots of ur trash into soil let me know!

KEEP ON IMPROVING!

Blessings~*~

In the Netherlands, where I live, it is quite difficult to have a garden like this. But I really like gardens, and yours look cool.
I would like to have flowers as well, at the sides. I love flower beds.

Awesome post, since I turned to a primarily vegetarian diet... I still have cheat days, im getting there, this is what my back yard looks like. Since I live out in the mid west, im somewhat limited what I can actually get growing before the cold weather comes around. I think a green house is in store for this year.

Great looking garden. Planting in containers can yield so much produce!! I grow all my plants in containers too!!

Great post. I am already planning my garden for the spring! Still feels so far away.

I upvoted this post only because of its great images! Bravo!

@jerrybanfield bilgiler harika. evdeki saksıda meşe palamudu yetiştirmeyi başardım,minik saksılarda domates soğan yetiştirmeye çalışıyorum ,minik bir hobi bahçemin olmasını çok isterdim

Nice to know that your in #gardening too. Excited to see more of your post related to #homesteading! BTW, Thank you @jerrybanfield!
