Ornamental Cabbage...?

Okay, so I see these plants every day as I am walking through the neighborhood down the road from the condo complex I live in, and I have no idea what they are. I believe they are an ornamental cabbage of some sort, but that remains to be determined.

I would like to find out what they are so I can grab a couple in the spring for my Mother's container garden on her balcony, so any help, suggestions would be appreciated.

I did try and knock on the door of the homeowner to discover the true identity of these various plants, but to no avail. I never see a vehicle in the driveway or signs of life at the house...other than these plants of course...which is not uncommon in a military town.

If you have any information that would help me in my quest for discovery, please feel free to leave a comment below.

Thank-you! :)

I think you have both the ornamental cabbage and the ornamental kale. The most frilly ones are the kale. They do best in the cool of the fall, winter, and spring. If you plant them in spring and there's a hot spell, they are more likely to bolt, with a tall center stalk. But they are still pretty, then.

You can eat them, too, although most people just look at them. Even in an area where people can't grow vegetables in their front yard, these would pass the restrictions as ornamental plants, lol.

You can usually buy them as starts. Or you can start your own from seed. Your mother will enjoy them! Happy gardening!

Thank-you for your wisdom and insight. I can't wait to get some for her container gardens on the balcony....and if they're edible, so much the better...nothing beats homegrown, especially if they're heirloom seeds.

You're welcome. Ornamental kale and cabbage have been around a long time. They are more tough and not as sweet as the other kale and cabbage. A quick blanch in boiling water helps, if they are too strong. Their flavor is best in the wintertime, certainly before it gets too warm. They are neat plants. I liked seeing your pictures of them!

Thank-you! Hopefully they will look just as nice on my Mother's balcony come next fall/winter. I thought they were pretty cool looking plants...definitely caught my eye...makes the 3 mile walk worthwhile!

You're welcome. Happy walking!

Ornamental cabbage or kale, Brassica oleracea cultivars, they make great container plants, good winter interest, they combine well with Swiss chard for a nice edible arrangement

Thank-you! I plan on getting a few for my mother to grow next year...we'll see how they come out!

I love it those are beautiful thanks for posting !!

Thank-you! :)
