My Skinny Sunflower: setbacks of starting indoors

in gardening •  7 years ago

I started growing a sunflower indoors this winter with hopes of moving out onto the patio in spring. It was quite lanky and weak and needed lots of support to stand up.

Lesson learned: sunflowers really need sun (and wind); otherwise, they will get tall (but stay skinny and weak) searching for light. Also, they need wind before they get tall so they get sturdy.

So, I started a new sunflower this spring (above); it's not very tall yet, but it got strong and sturdy quickly and moved to the patio in no time! Its solar panels (leaves) are getting bigger each day! It's loving the sunny weather :)
