GETTING READY TO GROW!

Spring is coming gardeners!

I can't wait, but I'm still glad that I have more time. I've got seedlings to start, gardens to plan, and bins and bins of seeds to sort through. I should probably do a few germination tests too, and get a few grow lights set up.

LET'S GROW!

Like many gardeners, homesteaders, and other people all around the world, we too like to grow some of our own food. Not only is it much more cost effective than purchasing produce, but there is a certain rewarding aspect to it too. After all, you are truly reaping what you've sown. You are enjoying the fruit of your labor. Plus, you are getting a delicious, edible return on your investment, and there is certainly something to be said for that.

My journey into the world of gardening was slow, and it wasn't really until after I married @mama-pepper and we began having @little-peppers that I actually "dug in" and began seriously gardening. At first it was mostly just hot peppers, but soon I realized that I needed to grow something else for my family to eat, and we have been branching out ever since. Now, it has become part of our lifestyle, and growing our own organic, healthy edibles is part of what we do.

With the move from Wisconsin to Arkansas, there came a lot of adjustments. Now we are closer to the equator so we have hotter summers and milder winters. Just watching the plants begin to green up already is exciting, because soon we will be planting again. It always seems that there are more plants that I would like to grow than the ones that I actually do, and my seeds supplies testify to that.

With the move south, we have also been given an opportunity to grow some varieties of fruits and vegetables that just would make it up in Wisconsin, so part of our recent efforts have focused on exploring some of our new possibilities. We've enjoyed a few new plants and have some more on our list to try this year. While we like eating all sorts of things, it is the plants that produce the most and thrive the best that are most beneficial to grow.

WHAT ABOUT YOU?

For all of you gardeners out there, what are some of your favorite garden plants to grow. Some of our new favorites are the Chinese Red Noodle Bean and the Kiwano - AKA African Horned Jelly Melon. They have been such a blessing to us that we have recommended them to others for two years now and we even gave away a lot of free seeds.

For those of you who have not started gardening yet, I'll let you in on a secret. If you plant certain seeds, they'll give you food! I know it sounds simple, but that is the main reason that I garden. If we didn't end up with anything to eat, then I wouldn't bother. Around here we've certainly got mouths to feed, and gardening is our favorite way to do it!

I know that a lot of people may not have a lot of room, you should take a look at steemians like @future24. He gardens on his balcony in Germany and get's to enjoy harvesting his own plants. If you've got room for a pot, then you've got room for a garden, it just may not be a big garden. Personally, I'd at least suggest that you give it a try sometime. For us, it's worth it!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

What is your whole garden portfolio once it’s in the ground @papa-pepper??
I had some big success planting jalapeños last summer. Made some stuffed jalapeños poppers, added them to burgers, and pickled most of the jalapeños to either enjoy on a sandwich or just eat with a fork.
Might want to think about adding some jalapeños if they’re not already in your aresenal. Delicious :)

killer deal man. I'm having a go @ tobacco this season. ill let you know if it turns out ok.

Are you guys going to start an orchard? I know it takes a couple of years to start getting any fruit or nuts, but once they do it just skyrockets through the roof! If you are planning to start an orchard, make sure to plant away from the goats...they'll eat the bark off the trees and cause other damage. We learned that the hard way when I was a kid.

Love your post(s)...so...upvoted!

farmers smart, successful for farmers. we will reap the rewards of what we plant. hopefully your crops flourish and the results are profitable. quickly plant the seeds you already hold.

I love what you are doing. Cultivation really has a lot of advantages. Aside from the food gotten it is also beneficiary to the land itself. Carrying the whole family along with the activity is a good idea. Have fun cultivating.

my son has been begging for seeds for a while now and I got him some corn and pumpkin seeds. My favorite to grow is eggplant, I just think they are a beautiful plant, they have a really strong energy, I don't even eat most of them.

I'm in Maryland and over wintering a Rocoto pepper now in it's third year. I did get 50 small peppers last Summer, hopefully more when it get tree size.

Rocoto is so hot! It is also very versatile for spicing. You are doing well to make it grow successfully so far north.

I live in MN, gardening is months away. Best Wishes with your garden.

Spring is coming, gardeners...

(sorry :D )

Success is always in the work of his friend's plantation .. I love the same post you friend

Too bad you can't survive on hot peppers alone, gotta add some diversity to your crops in order to feed your kids ;-)

I'm also planning on starting a small garden this spring, I'll start out by growing some potatoes, will most likely be starting some form of perma-culture. Otherwise probably lots of cabbage, cold and rainy Belgium doesn't really allow me to grow much else. Unless I build a greenhouse.

Yup, you gotta grow what you can.

wow great post.

Spring was already here, and my tomatoes were growing well and putting out new flowers.

And now, it is fall, with freezing cold morning. All the young leaves died.

So, now my esteem in shotteded.

I also need a lot more shit.

Living on the flipside.

Now its spring again.

we will all grow together

Most times we don't have to start big to earn big, little patience and endurance matters a lot. In my country, the governmet has really invested into agriculture because they have seen the potential it possesses.
Seeds we plant today like you said germinate to give us food, that's just the wholesome truth and I truly concur with you on that.
Happy following and seeing your good works. I have being learning a lot about agriculture in general through your post.. It is really commendable.
Keep the good work up, you are really encouraging people like me to look for alternative source of livelihood.
Thanks for this lovely expository about gardening.

Cool👍👍

Those new garden plants sound interesting! I love growing veggies in my garden! I usually grow tomatoes, peas, and lettuce! There are so many others to look into! They are more delicious than buying! Great post!

woooooww! look like you going to have a lot of garden food!
that is one of my dreams!!! I want to make my own garden plants here in Uruguay! so nice!
Good look!! @papa-pepper!!
greetings!

If you are right, the individual should plant something of vegetables and fruits, because the food you plant on your own has a very delicious taste, and ensure that it is 100 percent natural, because it is free of added chemicals. Thank you for this participation.@papa-pepper.

Did you buy the seeds online!? @papa-pepper will love to purchase some for my mum's garden. Great work! Thanks for sharing this!

I like to purchase from here:

Man, you are going to have so much going on in spring. Will the sleep ever come? Haha

I wish i have such a massive land to plant so many but that's okay...baby steps and little by little. I am always inspired when i see your posts sir.

I'm quite loving my veggie garden this year. It was really nice yesterday trying to think what I'll have for lunch. I wandered out the back and grabbed some lettuce leaves - two different types of lettuce, and a tomato and had a lettuce and tomato sandwich.

Nice.

It's not a big garden, and after the cyclones we've had this year, not a very tidy garden. But it's the first time we've had any food from it. So next year hopefully we'll get loads of fresh homegrown food.

And then......... I might need to make a bigger garden!

Hey there @papa-pepper hows life at the bottom of the hill? finally got around to this steemit thing and LOVE it... takes a little getting used to but loving it... I have a few plants for you when you get a chance to stop by I have the garden set for spring already with my early greens already sowed... i have about 50 strawberry plants i replanted last week when it was warm, looking for an awesome strawberry season! stop by! Have a great garden!

I am so ready to start planting outside. I have all my cold weather seedling started inside already.. All I see is ice outside though so I guess It'll be a bit longer. Good Luck this growing season brother!

I've got to get my little ones started.

AS we have heard one tree is enough for 16 kids to breath, it is a great initiative. best of luck brother.

Great work, How many trees are thinking to plant?

Getting excited for planting as well! Still waiting though as my last frost date is still 14 weeks away...I will be starting brassicas in 2 weeks or so. Love the seeing kale taking off.

The best way to know where your food comes from is to grow it yourself. I started gardening many years ago. It gets into your blood. It becomes a necessity to grow fresh fruit and veggies. And you pass this on to your children. Everyone benefits from the organically grown food.

Great post! I'm now following the whole pepper family. Looking forward to seeing what you do this growing season! Thanks for the recommendation on @future24, will check out his blog! I also garden on my balcony and am posting my progress as well on Steemit.

Would love to hear what you think!

what plantations will be planned
my advice is better to grow fruits for health.
good luck in gardening @papa-pepper

By the arctic circle we kind of stuck with the basics - potatoes, carrots in the garden and in the greenhouse cucumber and tomatoes. But its zone 2 so loong winters and short summers (tho the midnight sun helps a bunch). Gardening here in southern Alberta, Canada I was excited to grow squash - butternut squash is so yummy (and not something I had eaten before comming here), bell peppers was another thing I hadnt concidered even trying before but the ones we grew were sooo juicy. I recommend the chocolate beauty pepper - it has a juicy almost smoky flavour to it. Yum!!
Are you sticking to heirloom seeds when you buy so that you can save your own seeds?
