Redoing an entire garden by Sunscape

After 21 years I decided to decrease the size of one of my front garden beds along the front of the house. The Alberta Spruce had grown to about 6 foot in diameter and were reaching my 2nd story windows. They were starting to show their age too with dying branches and a lot of rust taking over on the needles.

We took them all out along with all the other plants and took about 5 foot off the outer edge to reduce the amount of work in that bed. Of course, we had to remove all the rocks and dig out the dirt to level it with the ground. That was quite a chore in itself. We also removed the 4' wide garden that ran the length of the sidewalk. We used to have a large Redbud tree there, but a borer killed it off. All the plants that were there were mainly shade plants. They all had to move to one of the shade gardens, as they were burning out due to the Southern exposure.

After all the work was done to rebuild the rock wall and enrich the soil we planted a small global Arborvitae. We kept the small shrubs and gave them a severe trimming to shape them up a bit. Now, it was time to place the annual flowers to give some color to the bed for the summer. I planted bright, pink Geraniums, Red Salvia and Calendula flowers all along the edge. Behind the flowers, I did a grouping of Cana bulbs to give some much-needed height to the garden. Below are a few photos of the progress.

Keep an eye out for upcoming posts on all my garden beds from spring to fall. I will be giving you a thorough peek into my personal paradise, one garden at a time. Happy Wednesday everyone.

Believe me, I know how much work that was!! Great choice for new flowers and I love the stone edging!

Thanks violetmed, It was a big job for us, but we are happy that we made it smaller and took out the overgrown shrubs.

You have some wonderful flowers and I love those stones, it's really natural and original :)

Thanks, Erikah. I lined every one of my beds with rocks like that. It took me a few summers but I got it all done.

Maybe I should do the same at my dad's.

It was a big job for us. But, it really needed to be done. We are looking to downsize the amount of gardening we do. Our ages are letting us know we need to trim back on some areas.

Was it more than one spruce tree you removed? Would have liked to see a picture of it...:-)

I actually had two large ones on each side of that section of the house. These are the only photos I could find right now. They were larger that than that tooIMGP6948.JPGa christmas snow.jpgIMGP7656.JPG

They were nice and full... I had to take down too many large trees that were to close to the house .. Never enough property for the future growth unless you live at Mount Vernon https://www.mountvernon.org/blog/2017/04/the-600-year-old-george-washington-oak-tree

Exactly! I've been to Mt. Vernon and it is an impressive place. That tree is enormous. My trees were only about 25 or so and really showing a lot of damage, especially from a heavy snowfall 2 years ago. It hurt them a lot. I had 5 all together but only one remains near my veggie garden.

How many beautiful flowers! I like so much how the little wall of rocks work in your garden!

Thank you Silvia, I use rocks for all my gardens to define them. I am happy with how they look.

I bet it's going to look GORGEOUS when it settles in. The flowers all look beautiful. Sounds like a rewarding job!

Thanks! It took us a while to get those old shrubs out and level it, but I am happy with it now. I will miss decorating the big trees for the holidays though.
