Garden update. Trellises complete & The Dragon Gourd

in gardening •  7 years ago

I switched up how we are gardening this year. I'm trying out some raised beds this year. The trellises are for the Cucumbers, Pole Beans and Ornamental Gourds. Cucumbers are coming along nicely. Beans have yet to poke out and 6 of the gourds on one side have popped out.

Raised Beds

These first 2 skinny raised beds have Dipper Gourds on the right and Ornamental Gourds on the left. In the same bed we have Indian Corn, Pop corn and Bush beans growing. This combo is known as the 3 sisters. The beans feed the corn Nitrogen and the squash is used for ground cover to keep the weeds out.

The larger beds on the right have cucumbers, Dill, Kohlrabi, Lettuce and Radishes. The large bed on the left we have Pole beans, Zucchini and Carrots.

Gourd Selection

As stated above we have some gourds growing in the skinny raised beds. We also planted some in the Sunflower patch. Up there we put the Mini Pumpkins and Turk's Turban. Here is what we are hoping to have for the fall.

Dragon Gourd

This is the first time I've ever tried this kind of gourd. It's also known as the Caveman's club. They claim it's the oldest crop on record. I'm gonna give it a shot and see what happens. Here is the seed pack and info.

Wow your garden blows mine away!

I put in many hours of work on it. It'll all be worth it here in a couple months. And more garden= less mowing. lol. What all do you grow in your garden?

Very nice! Not sure if you've heard of Square Foot gardening, it's great for growing lots of food in a small area. Check it out. http://www.squarefootgardening.com/

Seems like a really great setup. Hope you have a productive season.

Me too. I'm so far behind this year. Usually have the garden done a couple weeks before Memorial day. It was too wet this year. I'll keep posting updates.

I can't wait to see this in a month. Nicely done.

Me either. It's growing pretty fast already. The weather has been oddly great for the garden this year. Haven't had to water it at all.

It looks like your garden is off to a great start! We are trying out our raised beds too and so far so good. There is so much new stuff we are trying, pole beans being one of them. What kind of pole beans do you grow?

This year we have Kentucky Wonder and Blue Lake pole beans. We still have about 4 varieties of bush beans to plant still. I'll keep posting updates as I get them in the ground.

This was the first year we were trying pole beans. Two of the ones we are trying are called Good Mother Stallard and Cherokee Trail of Tears. I am looking forward to getting to try them. I am looking forward to seeing your updates!

Awesome. Can't wait to see the updates from your garden. Nothing better than walking out and eating some fresh food from the garden. Not sure how much room you have, but pole beans love growing with Corn, Sunflowers and Squash.
