Garlicoin mining FAQ

in garlicoin •  7 years ago  (edited)

Here are some answers to some common mining questions I am seeing on the Garlicoin discord.

1. Solo mine or pool mine
The entire hashrate is so high right now that a single gpu machine is very, very, very unlikley to mine a block. Pool is the way to go unless you can generate over 3 MH/s hashrate and even that is not high for the entire ecosytem

2. But I'm just doing solo for fun or the learning experience
Everybody says that. But we all know you are secretly thinking you will be the one lucky miner who happens to mine one block. It ain't happening. :) Yes, Yes. There are reports of a lucky miner here and there that mined one solo. People win the lottery tool. You really are better off solo mining.

3. Which pool to pick
There are pros and cons to each pool. There is no "best" pool. A larger pool will payout less more often whereas a smaller pool will payout more less often. Fees vary as well.
This is a good resource for picking a pool:

4. I need better Nvidia performance. Gimmie that sweet Garlic
Most NVidia cards can get a performance boost by adding
--lookup-gap=2
to the end of the first line in their start up bat file (typically called "Run-Miner-Pool-Nvidia.bat" or "Run-Miner-Solo-Nvidia.bat").
Found this post and it has some great performance tuning suggestions: https://pastebin.com/5RGTXJkA
Some folks experience slowness tuning some of the parameter. Note, some nvidia cards will balance speed, temperature and voltage. More info here: https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/5g9jo9/gpu_boost_30_how_it_works/

5. Is my GPU temperature too high
As long as you are under 85 degree C you are mostly okay. Not all systems are equal. I run two systems one hangs around 70 degrees C and the other 80 degrees C.

6. I don't want to use all of my GPU. CCminer
GPUs are 0,1,2,etc... you can use the -d parameter to specify a specific GPU. See list of parameters here: https://github.com/cbuchner1/ccminer/blob/master/README.txt

7. NVidia with error "HTTP request failed":

8. Troubleshooting window closing or no error message
Open Command Prompt, navigate to the folder/path with the .bat file and then run the .bat file from there. Since you manually opened the command prompt, the window won't close and you will see the error message.

9. No mining over night
Possible causes: (1) Crashed and (2) check your windows power savings and see if you computer is set to go to sleep.

10. How often does a pool payout? What are the fees, etc...?
Pools have their own policies and payout different. Check your pools website for details or see if they have a discord to ask there. Some wait for 100 blocks after finding a block before distributing coins to the pool. I mine at FreshGarlicBlocks and they pay out pretty regularly. You can fine more pools here:
http://pools.garlicoin.fun/

11. How to mine

12. Given launch configu 'isten does not validate
For some reason, the .bat files found here have -listen paramter which I don't think does anything:
https://pandawanfr.github.io/GarlicRecipes/how-to-mine.html

either -l is a param and that's why the message says 'isten'
However, I don't see -l listed here so not sure what it does:
https://github.com/cbuchner1/ccminer/blob/master/README.txt

13. Can't save as .bat file
In notepad's save as dialog at the bottom is an option for "Save as type:" Change the drop down to "All Files (.) and then you can name your file whatever.bat

14. How to see file extensions so I can rename .txt to .bat
Another options is in Windows options do
View->Options->View
and uncheck the option
"Hide extensions of known file types"
then you can rename any file and the extensions (ie. rename Run-Miner-Pool-Nvidia.txt to Run-Miner-Pool-Nvidia.bat for example)

15. How to extract the contents of a file
Download and install 7zip:

16. What I mine
I mine at Fresh Garlic and they pay out pretty regularly. You can fine more pools here:

17. Why doesn't my pool hashrate match the hashrate shown in my miner?
If you just started, your pool may take your hashrate as an average over time and it will overtime start to increase.
However, most likely your miner hashrate will always be more than your pool hashrate. To save network traffic, not all hashes are sent over the network. Your pool will have an acceptable size configured.
Much more details can be found in this excellent post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/NiceHash/comments/6nkqb7/why_the_hashrate_on_the_website_is_different_from/

18. I'm using CCMiner and my CPU usage is 100%. Why?
I'm not personally having that issue but I've seen plenty of reports of users in the discord that are experiencing that issue. As of yet, I haven't seen the problem solved. One miner just pinned the process to one CPU so that the computer was somewhat usable while mining.

I've heard reports of yacminer possibly fixing this. Might be worth a try.

19. This error: JSON decode failed(1): '[' or
{
ex[ected near 'c'

Most times I see this error folks have been entering the pool's website for the -o parameter. It needs to be the "Address" column listed here:
http://pools.garlicoin.fun/

20. What is my estimated garlicoin with my hashrate?

21. I have card XYZ. What hashrate should I expect.
