SEC-S19 / W5 | Cooking Methods Used in the Kitchen. A Walk Through the Gastronomy of Another Country

It is another week of learning, week 5 of gastronomy and this week is another interesting topic being discussed. I've been using different cooking methods in my kitchen and so it is easy for me to learn and understand this methods in the course.

I have used the drying, wet and combined method every day in my kitchen, of course each of this methods has its own advantage or benefits. Also, all foods doesn't use the same method, foods are cooked depending on the type of food and how it is being prepared.

In this contest, I appreciate the fact that it creates opportunity to get to know other countries through their gastronomy. So I'm traveling to another country because of their cuisine, enjoy the great tour to an epicurean adventure to Finland. Enjoy this delicious finish cuisines called Lihapullat.

Lihapullat is a delicious Finnish creamy cusine made with beef, butter and cream baked into a crunchy ball. It is also called meatballs and is their traditional food enjoyed with lingonberry jam.

Ingredients

  • Beef (grinded)
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Egg
  • Cream
  • Spice
  • Onions
  • Butter


Explain what cooking method you are using.

And preparing this finish cuisine, I used both steaming and frying and that makes it a combined cooking method. I steam the meat using a little water to make it absorbed the flavour of spice and also to make the meats soft enough to be blended then after adding all ingredients, I fried the meatballs.

Let me show you the steps I used

I prepared all my ingredients and set aside as seen in this picture, I blended the beef, blended 2 loafs of bread, minced onions, egg, butter and mixed spice.

I mixed all the ingredients in a bowl thoroughly

I cut the dough into smaller pieces then roll it into a ball shape as seen in this picture, then set it aside for frying.

Using a vegetable oil, I fried it neatly into a brown crunchy meatballs with low heat of gas. Note; It can be baked as well.

I didn't see lingonberry jam to buy, so I used a mother sauce made from rouze (ketchup) to eat it as seen in the picture.




Why did you choose that dish? What motivated you to make this recipe?

I always want to explore finish cultural dish so as to learn their recipes and mostly to expand my skills in cooking their cusines. So this reason motivated me to go research on finish cuisine as this contest gives me the opportunity. Finish cuisines is very much interesting to have a taste as it always looks appetizing.

Lihapullat(meatballs)

I so much enjoyed this Lihapullat and my baby finished almost half of the balls. As a matter of fact, It was her dinner, so I will be adding this meal to her food menu. I like the fact that it was really crunchy and nice, then the ingredients in it is very nutritious as it has enough protein in it.

It is ALWAYS a good day for meatballs - or as we call them here in South Africa... "Frikkadels" :D And those do indeed look incredibly tasty @eliany - I am not surprised that your little one ate them up like candy haha!!!

I don't often make frikkadels, but everyone is always happy when I do - especially me, because I generally serve them with mashed potato and I absolutely LOOOOVE mashed potato!!!

One of the things I love most about meatballs is that they are super adaptable! You can pretty much change them up however you want and create a completely unique taste experience every single time!

Sometimes when I make them, I add in finely diced bell peppers (normally the red and yellow ones as they are sweeter than the green ones. They add such a wonderful flavour punch!

Another thing which goes really well with that is coriander (dhanya/cilantro) - now THAT is amazing, but obviously only if you enjoy the flavour of coriander (which I do).

Oh and one more thing, which my mom taught me, which is REALLY handy... and that is to make a BIG batch of balls - some for that night and some you just roll into balls and place on a tray. Put them in the freezer (still on the tray) for about an hour then take them out and throw them into a freezer bag for future use and pop them back into the freezer. Then you have ready made home made meatballs the next time you want them - all you have to is take them out, defrost them, coat them in flour and fry them! :)

I never knew that meatballs has Finland origin and that it is also called “Lihapullat”.
I am familiar with this dish but your recipe is totally different from the one I tried, instead of bread crumbs, I usually make use of corn flour. The meatballs came out smooth and it looks tasty. It is good that your princess likes it. I am loving gastronomy class for giving us the privilege to expand our knowledge weekly🤗

Oh yea thank you for your contribution to my post meatballs is a finish dish Will I call it dessert. Yeah I saw it from there steps of preparation to use bread crumbs and that is why I used it I never prepared it before though but I can say it was really excellent I'm testing as you can see from the picture.
