Free resources for genealogy,,,,,

in genealogy •  8 years ago

Greetings!!

I have started compiling a list of resources I use for genealogy. This is just a partial list and I will be adding to it from time to time. Some of these are already well known, some are specific to the area of the country I search the most.

http://www.findagrave.com FAG is a web site run primarily by volunteers to create memorials for deceased family members. Volunteers will also go and take pictures of graves in their local cemeteries for folks who live in other areas so they can see where their ancestors are buried and sometimes even glean more info from the stones. I have several of my Parker ancestors memorials created and linked together. It is and hopefully will always be an excellent resource for future generations of genealogists. I also volunteer by going out and taking pictures whenever possible.

http://www.fultonhistory.com This site is awesome for searching old newspapers for free!! It is primarily for NY, NJ and PA but he is adding on other states when he can so do not discount checking in here. It is a little difficult to navigate at first but here is a great blog on how to do searches there: http://whereyoucamefrom.blogspot.com/2014/01/tutorial-searching-fulton-history.html first time users will find it very helpful to read this blog first.

http://www.nyhistoricnewspapers.org This is another free useful site for searching old newspapers in NY state. Search by county.

http://www.familysearch.org Brought to you by the Church of Latter Day Saints, family search has an extensive amount of records available for free use.

http://www.genealogyintime.com Has two free search engines which could lead you to tons of records and family trees.

http://www.google.com Yes, Google!! You would be surprised sometimes what you might find on google when searching for your ancestors. Of course, it is a crap shoot and no guarantees, but then you might get lucky too. Sometimes google will lead you to another person researching the same family. Sometimes you find an old newspaper article that provides you a ton of clues. You just never know.

http://www.legacy.com A free obituary site for more recent obituaries.

http://www.halfwaybrook.com Very specific for Eldred, Sullivan, NY but has been a great resource for my personal searches.

Don't discount local libraries in the area you are searching or their historical/genealogical societies.

Until next time,,,,,,
