Bill Burr (comedian): my favorite at the moment

in getyerlearnon •  7 years ago

I don't know how long his stand-up specials have been around for. I am quite detached over here in South-East Asia. I often don't hear about new actors and musicians until years after they have emerged; let alone comedy acts.

That being said: Bill Burr is outstanding. I laughed a lot and perhaps you will do so I therefore highly suggest you check him out if you are a fan of stand-up.

Rolling Stone magazine calls Burr "the undisputed champ of rage-filled comedy." I suppose I can identify with that and agree. An awful lot of his material is situational (meaning it comes from life experience and involves decent-length stories rather than one-liners,) and his delivery normally involves a lot of shouting.

He is one of the few comics out there that pays absolutely no attention to being politically correct and takes risks on a regular basis that could end his career. I think that is one of the main reasons why his career hasn't been ended by the PC police, because he doesn't give a S**T if they are watching and judging him. He invites their criticism because at the end of the day he is a comedian, and if you take the stuff that someone who is supposed to expose the absurd for the sake of a laugh too seriously... well, of course you are going to end up offended, and I am quite certain Burr wouldn't care.

He is ranked 17th on a list of the greatest stand up comedians of all time. This folks, is a very special list to be a part of as it involves the likes of Robin Williams, Dave Chapelle, Jerry Seinfeld, and Richard Prior.

Bill has somewhat recently come to terms with his hair loss, which is good. It is a battle that so many people face including yours truly. I think the fact that you are a multi-millionaire makes that burden significantly easier to bear.

Here are some clips from my favorite stand-up special of his and be warned, some of it is explicit.

I have heard the clips in the above special twenty times or so and I still laugh when i hear it. His delivery is just spot on. He does a fantastic job and I have seen him perform (not in person) in front of hostile crowds and handle them easily. He is simply a genius. He was also in Breaking Bad briefly, which is pretty special.

Bill is involved heavily in the Netflix series entitled "F is for Family" and my personal favorite stand-up special of his is called "You People are all the Same."

If you like to laugh and aren't too over-the-top PC, i highly suggest you check him out.

One of my favourite is the Walk your way out. Bill Burr once again proved that he is among the most creative, original, and hilarious comics working today. In this special, he mocks everything from politics to race to fast food. His rants were often hilarious, self aware, and undeniably creative-and at times a little concerning. Part of the fun of watching Burr's stand up is his love of politically incorrect dark comedy. Burr has no limits, he is not afraid to do an entire bit about how he would eliminate people if he was a dictator, and he still comes across as a likable guy! You can tell that Burr doesn't give a damn, he says what he wants to say and makes it hilarious, unique, and entertaining for all of those who can handle it.
There was one 20 minute segment in which he just talks about a video on a gorilla that learns sign language and his reaction to it, which leads to a Planet of the Apes like dystopia. This show is a masterwork of creativity and dark humor, and I cannot wait to see every single one of Burr's stand up specials in the future.

"the undisputed champ of rage-filled comedy"

Yeah, I'd agree with that, in the sense that he's the Antony Joshua of rage-fueled stand-up of comedians making specials right now.

He's not the all-time champ though, in my opinion, cos he's actually way more careful than your review suggests. He wears a permasmile that indicates he's not serious about anything he says, and when he drops a politically incorrect bomb, he immediately backtracks and checks the crowd's ok, like a crowd nanny, before moving on.

The rage ninjas of the past never did that. They genuinely did not give a damn. I think Bill Burr is like an all-time number 4 maybe.

Number 3 all-time rage comic I'd give to Andrew Dice Clay. If you wanted genuinely unhinged politically incorrect badabing badaboom lunacy, this guy killed it. He was a little too silly about it to be higher on my list though.

More angry than Clay was Denis Leary. He laid into his targets with total unrestrained fury. To see Leary unleash his I'm-an-asshole persona was something else. He literally shocked you with how out there he could be, and how much he enjoyed being out there. He never checked to see if his audience could handle it, he just assumed they would. Total confidence.

But the Mohammad Ali of rage comedy, the number 1 rage comic of all time, in my view, was Sam Kinison. That dude was so convicted, he'd come on calm, mention a topic he didn't like, and then just SCREAM in the audience's face. Just youtube for clips of this dude at work. I've never seen anything so funny in my life. It's the belly laugh that grabs the entire audience by the balls, including the women.

Bill Burr will never get a laugh as big as Kinison's biggest laugh, but the guy sustains. Burr goes for an hour or more, getting funnier and funnier, without ever flagging. It's a miracle really.

You love him for that cheeky grin he always wears. He's your best buddy in a bar, the guy everyone wants to hang with cos he'll amuse you.

He borrows the high-pitched fury of Denis Leary, tames it with a smile, then does the act-outs of a Richard Pryor type comedian with mocking mimicry and escalating wildness until he gets multple laughs. His act-outs of women and dogs and even his own penis are legendary.

But deep down, Burr doesn't scare you the way Kinison could. This means he never amps the tension in the room to one hundred percent the way Kinison did. And therefore he never gets to deflate that massive tension build-up, which Kinison could do in one second flat with his trademarked Kinison piercing scream of rage.

So, yeah, Bill Burr, the reigning champ of comedy ragers, but I'm betting he'd be the first to tell you Sam Kinison is the all-time-hall-of-famer! :)

I had forgotten about Kinison. Yes, he certainly had a unique style.

Easily one of the greats and one of my favorites. In a time where everyone's feelings seem to leave everyone else walking on eggshells, Bill Burr simply doesn't care. He's honest, unafraid, observant, and hilarious which, I feel, is everything that makes a comic great. If you're a fan and want to see more of him, he has a few more stand-up specials on Netflix including an animated show he created based on his life growing up (called F is for Family), and his appearances on Joe Rogan's podcast are always hilarious. If you're looking for some more excellent comedians check out Chris D'Elia, Arj Barker, Gary Gulman, Demetri Martin, and Bryan Callen, just to name a few.

Never heard of him and he is fairly good. I enjoy Jimmy Carr, you have to watch his shock show from Montreal. He is also non PC.

@gooddream, Yes, Stand-up Comedy is an trending aspect for sure and in my opinion people join or people stream for the Stand-up comedy because they want to release their stress and burden while having laughs and fun times. And in life there should be smile aspect because our smile can spread happy and positive environment.

And yes, sometimes Stand-up Comedians take risk because, most of the people feel offended when any of the comedian pick the Topic of Religion and Politics and sometimes they face lot criticism for sure. But comedians will do what they want to no matter what's the situation is.

And I've never watched the videos of this particular Stand-up Comedian performance but soon i will explore and hope that i can see some fun stuff for sure. And for sure it's reflecting as this comedian is Transformed drastically but in my opinion without hair look is suiting.

And 17th rank is awesome in my opinion when there are comedians in numbers. And this rank is showcasing the performance levels of this particular Stand-up Comedian.

Wishing you an great day and stay blessed. 🙂
