John Wick (movie): more than I expected from Reeves

This is in relation to the first movie of the series. I am going to try to keep it relatively spoiler-free.

Reeves plays the role of the title character, John Wick; a hitman who has retired an unspecified amount of time ago. John lives a quiet life away from other people, his best interests in life being his super-awesome Ford Mustang Mach 1, and his dog.... a life, that if you take away the car and the ex-hitman status, is very similar to my own.

At a random gas station one day he has the misfortune of running into the arrogant son of a crime-lord named Iosef Tarasov who is played by Alfie Allen (who you might remember as the mostly cowardly Theon Greyjoy from Game of Thrones.) Iosef inquires about how much John would like for his car and John blows him off simply stating "she's not for sale."

Because of his foolishness and not knowing who John is, he and his bodyguards follow Wick home and beat him up, steal his car, and kill his dog (this is not a spoiler, it happens in the first couple minutes and is likely in the movie trailer.)

Obviously, this makes John very upset, and he decides to return to his roots. When Iosef gloats to people about what he did, people immediately distance themselves from him. He is completely unaware of the notoriety that Wick has in the underworld.

And thus begins the action-packed tale of revenge.

This movie was special to me because while I know there are many people that disagree with this notion, I don't really expect much from Reeves in films even though a vast majority of his movies end up making hundreds of millions of dollars. Despite this opinion, i really felt as though this film showed some versatility of his acting abilities as he is required, due to his grief, to portray genuine human emotion - and he nails it.

Also, even though it would probably be significantly less glamorous in my own hands, if someone were to murder my dog, they would have to die.... that's just how it works if you mess with my schmoopy-pie.

This movie is a definite must-watch, and is on my list of one of the best action films of the past 5 years.

"that's just how it works if you mess with my schmoopy-pie"

Could not agree more!

I had a good vibe about this one from the moment I saw the title, cos any action revenge pic that sounds like a homage to John Woo (John Woo-ick lol), the director of super hard-boiled and stylish "The Killer," and the even more hard-boiled and OTT "Hard-Boiled" (might as well just call it what it is), is sending the right smoke signals.

Then there's the fact that Keanu Reeves is such an obviously gentle soul. Even more than Richard Gere before him, he simply exudes Buddhist passivity. No revenge pic works well unless the protagonist really really doesn't want to go there, at first. That's also why Charles Bronson was such a good choice for "Death Wish," in that his world-weary wrinkles suggested a man of deep humanity and caring.

Keanu Reeves seems more gentle than any other action star, at some deep level. This has sometimes come across as wooden, but in "The Matrix" movies, and the "Speed" movies, and most of all in the the "John Wick" movies, he moves beyond his soft and squishy immovable core to to emote something much deeper.

I think the fact that it's all about a dog, and through the dog, his love for his wife, that really triggers something deep in Reeves. That Buddhist love, of all life, informs his every scene.

The action is every bit John Woo, and also draws on all that fight choreography training Reeves got on"the Matrix" movies, the colors of the cinematography and framings are ultra stylish and gorgeous to look at, and the sheer surplus of villains and bosses match the best Bruce Lee action movies.

The "John Wick" movies bridge the best of Western and Eastern cinematic traditions to create one of the best action franchises we have yet seen, and I can't wait for John Wick 3 next year!

As they say in the movie, John Wick is less the boogeyman, more the guy you hire to kill the boogeyman! :)

Hiii... Gooddream

This is the superb movie I have watch ever.i see this movie more than five times. The role of john wicks great. And also he take revenge for his dog. Garage Mechanical Expression. Father of killer expression all are great.

I like most, father of killer oralio tell his son about wick...

thanks for the movie review, now i'm curious to watch the movie, I really liked the way you explain all these about this movie.

Hehehe any movie that has Theon Greyjoy has to be worth watching. His performance in GOT still makes me laugh anytime i recall

The greatest thing about Theon Greyjoy is that he is always the biggest jerk in everything he's in.

The only exception was when I saw him in a play called "The Spoils" in London, and actually, Mark Zuckerberg was a way bigger jerk than Theon Greyjoy.

Or maybe it was Jesse Eisenberg who was a way bigger jerk than Alfie Allen. I'm not sure who's real and who's not. But yeah, noone's a bigger jerk than Mark Zuckerberg. :0

Yea part one of this movie was tripple mega dope. But part Two was bullshit for me. The story in the part one was dope and one you could easily flow with...I just hope you can do a review of the part Two tomorrow so I can see what you feel about it.

i've not seen it, but i'll put it on my list

I actually can't wait to hear what you have to say about Part 2, cos it was even more dope than part 1. Of course, it's all just opinions lol.

I had watched one of the series, it was thrilling.

Hi gooddream. I agree with you on this one. Worth watching. Haven't watched the sequel yet though.

First of all. Nice dog. Pretty cute and cuteeeeyy!!! Lets talk of the movie. Keane reeves has an interesting role. He was a rowdy before but now leads a simple life along his car and puppy. All the things are right when he is messed up by a son of a crime lord. Thats when the movie gains interest. John now goes back in full mood to revenge his loved ones. Nice story. Keep up the good work.

@gooddream I agree with you on this film 100%. I was not expecting much from it, but was very impressed with the acting versatility that Keanu Reeves showed in this film. I feel the same way, if someone messed with my Yorkie, Chewbacca, there would be all kinds of trouble to pay.

But back to your review....I was actually impressed with all of the acting. I am still waiting to watch John Wick 2 but it surpassed the first film at the box office and I hear they are doing a third film. Have you ever read or heard of the inspiration for the story behind the film's franchise? It is very interesting.

You have to see the second part and we look forward to your opinion

Thanks for the decent review. Heard it's pretty lead-lined from the get-go.

Always kops for it right does Alfie Allen.

John Wick Han! !! Pretty brilliant plot and a nice story which isn't at all a spoiler coz all this is contained on the trailer too. Keane reeves is forced from being a simple person to get back his rowdy role once a gangsters son beat him up and killed his dog. Lovely story and an interesting sequence. Keep up the good work.

"John Wick" - laconic silent movie, strict and perfect in its aesthetics, straightforward and unambiguous in perception, built around the figure of the protagonist. This character, performed by Keanu Reeves-a person certainly condemned by society, but in the eyes of the audience worthy of every respect. For being inflexible, for being purposeful, for having an indomitable desire to live. And here is where the very weather movie is beginning to change. Despite the external entourage in the form of night, rain, universal fatigue and physical wounds, it is expected for the cinema and still unexpectedly for the viewer it turns out that the dawn is already close, the darkest hour is behind, and in the life of John Wick soon there will be a thaw.
