NES Classic Edition Mini (game console): don't do it... you'll regret it

in getyerlearnon •  6 years ago

For those of us that were alive during the time that the NES was released in the mid 80's you already know that it was a pretty amazing time to be a gamer. Never before had anything even close to this advanced been available for home use. It was released pretty close to the time that Atari nearly succeeded in destroying the home video game market entirely.

Somewhat recently, this relatively inexpensive mini console complete with 30 of the best NES games was released and I am here to tell you that if you didn't buy one already, don't do so unless you are a collector.

The games on-board include Kid Icarus, Metroid, Zelda, FInal Fantasy, Punch Out, and Contra - which were the favorites of everyone and anyone that had a NES back in the day. These were absolutely epic titles that inspire fond memories in all of us that were alive and loving games back in those days.

With all that wonderful praise I am spewing above why on earth would I encourage someone to NOT purchase this thing? Well, the answer is simple: Your memories of the games are much better than the actual games. If you go back and attempt to re-play those games now, you may very well end up spoiling your memories of these games.

They were legendary at the time but so many advancements have been made since then that honestly, i think the game is better left in your brain the same way that I feel that most 80's TV shows and films should also be left in your memories rather than attempted to re-hash.

I loved this as much an anyone, but it was more than 30 years ago

I say this because I recently talked about how much I loved The Incredible Hulk and Quantum Leap TV shows only to abandon watching them after a few episodes because well, times have changed and so has my expectations of entertainment. Video games are not an exception.

A friend of mine had one of these just sitting on a shelf and I plugged it in and was ready to unplug it after 10 mins or so and I am a dedicated retro gamer. Some things are better left in the past and I think your memories of how epic the NES was back in the 80's is definitely one of those things.

If you think I am wrong, go ahead and put $60 into it and then send me a phone of it collecting dust on your shelf in 30 days or less :P

@gooddream Oh God! I love those golden days of my life when I first came to know about console gaming. Seriously speaking, Nintendo or wii was not available and even playstation and xbox were so dearer that you could buy a motorbike with same amount. But what I had was a locally made gaming console (or may be it was Chinese made, i forgot) in which i used to play those awesome overgreen games!
I have played contra, mario, F1 race, zelda, final fantasy, beach ball, shoot the duck and also many more games in it. There was also a pistol attached with the console and i used to use it to play shoot the duck and other action games! I had to buy games loaded in black cassette like cases, and there was 4-5 games per cassette. Back then it was 49-99 INR (Roughly 1$-2$ back then) and believe me, I was saving money from everywhere to build my own game collection.
Nowadays its a trend to play high graphics games on mobile , pc or ji fi consoles... I also play games on pc and mobile. But those were holden days when I used to plays games for hours.. Even whole night.... I really miss those days...

Stay happy and keep it up mate!

I guess it depends on the person. There is a big, thriving retro gaming community who enjoy the straightforward, basic and challenging games of the 8 and 16-bit era. I love both myself. I bounce between playing new games on my Switch and popping in a NES or Genesis game into my Retron5.

Some things are left better remembered, and I agree with TV shows. I tried rewatching Knight Rider and that just doesn't hold up.

Some games don't age well, others do. Mega Man 2, Mario 3, Zelda, etc. are still fun games today.

As much as I agree with you and do not play the old games for that exact reason, I still feel inside I would love to play 1992 sonic the hedgehog, I can’t see how I wouldn’t enjoy it! But, I’m not doing it yet. I would like to in many years to come, have a collection of the old consoles and have them set up - maybe even during my retirement haha just to revisit that super nostalgic fun again

I supose it depends, there are people who can enjoy old and dated things than others can't, just for fun or nostalgia. I remember I used to watch the incredible hulk when I was little, later during my teens the series was on a retro channel and I watched it despite the fact there were recent and better shows available (that I watched too). Now I'm watching Mazinger Z during breakfast hahaha, you see? I'm one of those people

I am a 90's child so I haven't played Nintendo but yeah we played sony video games a lot and Mario was everyone's all time favourite game .

I have these games at home, here are 600 games on and one thing I can tell you .. this is nothing compared to the Nintendo from the past .. the controller is also super small and light, and the image is also super old. not worth it !!

Im totally agree with you, and it will be the same thing for PS1 and N64 Edition, Etc... btw I think this was a greedy idea from the gaming industry.

Interesting. I still like to play retro games.

This is an interesting way to look at the subject, because I tried some things I loved in my childhood and found the experience isn't as good as an adult. In those cases, nostalgia glasses didn't save me from the truth

i think the game is better left in your brain the same way that I feel that most 80's TV shows and films should also be left in your memories

But to be fair the oppostite also happened to me, when I tried Dino Crisis after I became older, it was better experience than I had as teenager.

Depends on the game (at least to me). Some certainly have not aged well but many are just as fun now as they were then. I feel the same about 80s TV. I still love STTNG for instance but the A-Team doesn't hold as much appeal as it used to. I watched some MacGyver recently and enjoyed it. Netflix seemingly captured over the air quality is annoying though.
