I am a big fan of platformers, especially simplistic ones that rely on a good story rather than super complicated control schemes. My favorite game of all time is called "Inside" and is a 2-d platformer that only used 2 buttons throughout the entire game. Therefore when Never Alone was revealed to me, I was excited for another story-rich simplistic game.
The fact that this game involves real history of the Alaskan Iñupiaq people is admirable and you can tell that the designers were very careful to be respectful in the creation of this story. They involved real lore and throughout the game you "unlock" videos and even interviews of the people and creatures of their land in order to learn something while you play, which I thought was a nice touch. The artwork is lovely and the scenery in the game is crisp and nicely done.
You control a little girl named Nuna, who very early on in the game runs into an unusually friendly wild-fox. You control both Nuna and the fox by switching between them and as you would expect each character has certain abilities that the other can not perform. The puzzles are for the most part very simple and rarely frustrating. The landscape is desolate and chilly but that was the idea since it does take place in Alaska during a rather harsh storm.
Now, despite all those pluses which I applaud the developers for, the game is extremely repetitive and the controls are pretty bad. There are certain puzzles where you have to have Nuna at one point really low, and the fox needs to get somewhere up high - this isn't difficult but as soon as you swap to the other character the built in AI takes over and immediately has them run towards one another, removing them from the perch they need to be standing on and sometimes making them fall to their deaths.
The fox is also capable of invoking spirit platforms (only the fox can do this) but as soon as he walks away from them a bit, the platforms disappear. If the AI is left to it's own devices, this is precisely what ends up happeneing. The fox moves away from a platform that Nuna is in the process of climbing and then the platform disappears. The only solution I could find to this AI bug was to plug in a second controller and force the fox to stay in place by mimicking a player 2.
This is a massive and unforgivable flaw in the gameplay. Did they even test this? It isn't a terribly long game so I can't imagine they did.
The controls are also pretty bad. A lot of the game involves running away from something that is trying to harm you like a polar bear or some giant other thing and if you time your jump just slightly away from the edge of the ice you are not going to make it. I have found it is actually much easier in these scenes to control the fox and let the computer make Nuna jump because the fox can jump further.
This might just be because I am not a great player, i don't know. However, this doesn't change the fact that being chased by something outside on the ice is 1/3 of the game. There isn't enough variety in it.
If you are going to play this game with 2 people the entire way through - buy it. Because it is really is beautiful and the music is wonderful and the true-story lore is very interesting. However, when you have a puzzle portion of a game that REQUIRES the two characters to be able to access certain points to complete it, i think it should be relatively high up on the programmers' list of priorities to make sure that the built-in AI functions in a way where this is actually possible without rigging the system by plugging in another controller. I live alone with my dog, and she is terrible at using the xbox controller because her paws are too small and she doesn't have thumbs.

i'm sorry but when a game is all but unplayable, it doesn't matter how pretty it is
Amazing and unique experience for adventure seekers, taking part in the beautiful frosty landscapes of Alaska, speaking of the life and traditions of Iñupiat people, of a culture still existent today!
The game is very beautiful and educational. There are not as many games today that teach you a lot about the characters and environment you dive into, and Kisima Ingitchuna is an adventure dedicated to that!
Storytelling is an important part in this culture, something you learn in the game as well. Through the game we get to learn of two stories told by the elders, and now experienced in an interactive way! I am sure that seeing the stories you've been told once come to life in a new form is an extreme joy!
Combining it's unique storytelling, great polished graphics and non-repeatable side-scrolling game play the game turns into a true masterpiece competitor.
You are a little girl called Nuna, with her loyal companion, an arctic fox! Take control of both characters or play with friends and learn more of this amazing culture!

Man is a curious creature. During our life we tend to learn as much as possible about the world around us, the history of our ancestors, unattainable stars - in short, in general, everything. In this we are helped by a variety of ways to obtain information, including video games. Many will say that in a good way you need to read textbooks and encyclopedias, because in other ways, knowledge will be less, and much more time is spent. But we must not forget about folklore, through which people from generation to generation transmit their culture and customs. Oral stories can lose important details in the course of time, and are generally subjective, but they best convey the culture of the people, its color. In the XXI century, folklore creativity came to video games. Never Alone is a direct proof of that.
Upper One Games turned out to create a beautiful, fabulous and in some places fascinating story about a brave girl and her pet, but it was not possible to make an interesting platformer. More importantly, the studio has proved that educational games have the right to life and at the same time - not necessarily compilations of tasks for preschool children. For Never Alone it is possible to spend pleasantly one of the approaching snow evenings. The main thing is that at the same time you do not play alone, otherwise irritation from technical defects can cover the whole charm of Inupiat fairy tale.

How disappointing, I had seen the trailer and it looked promising for the beauty of the shots. Thanks for the review!

It's hard for a game to have great potential when its very repetitive, appreciate the in-depth review.

That's actually quite accurate I have to say, I myself don't own the game, yet I did play it at a friends place together just a bit and I really liked it. However at a later point I found out that my friend who owned the game didn't have a lot of good things to say.
I've actually been doing some "historical" gaming posts lately, covering noteworthy games released in certain years (just made two about 93 and 2000) and still despite all the above the game does show a lot of devotion from the devs side in terms of how it looks and plays, sadly they just didn't nail "it all'

The graphics, the story, the characters and the educative stuff seem lovely but if the game have that bug that one need to plug a 2nd controller to deal with it, that's bad, so practically it's a forced 2 player game

Lovely game. I have said earlier on too that iam a fan of simplistic games involoving good characters no matter how much and also some good story. This game "never alone" looks good and has a brillaint story too. You have too control a small girl and a fox both of whom are hella cute. I would like this game to be played with a cousin all the way through. Thanks for sharing.

@gooddream, Great to read this, and yes some games give pain to us when it comes to the controls, and when we face the difficulty in controlling aspect then for sure we feel the Disappointment.
And when we talk about the Gaming stuff then in my opinion the most important thing is story and if we will not get effective story then for sure that game will not going to succeed in increasing of the Engagement aspect.
And while reading this stuff for sure i want say that, i really liked the story and the whole essence and sometimes it's great to see the inbuilt story videos and interviews because that gives weight to the game and we get information too.
And when it come to gaming then for sure music is one aspect which will determine if we will feel that coming back essence or not, and as you said this game have great music and for sure great music can make the gaming experience really amazing.
Wishing you an great day and stay blessed. 🙂
