The Pianist (film): Wonderful film I nearly skipped

I didn't see this film for years after it's release based solely on the title. I didn't even investigate what it was about because of the title. I can't really say what it was about the name that bored me into not ever even checking it out but that's what happened. Years later out of boredom i ended up seeing it and wow, just wow.

You see, the movie doesn't really even have very much to do with pianos, that just happens to be the profession of the main character Władysław Szpilman (played by Adrien Brody - and yes, i copy/pasted the name) who is a Jewish Polish person at a time that it was really inconvenient to be either of those things. The film starts with him playing music in a radio studio when the city and the station is bombed by invading Nazi forces. Realizing that Poland is going to lose, Szpilman and his family are briefly elated to discover on a radio broadcast that England and The United States have declared war on Germany, however their joy is quickly turned to horror as the aid does not arrive.

As the brutality of the Nazis escalates, Szpilman sees his world turned upside down as all Jews are moved to Warsaw ghettos and things get continually worse. I won't get into specifics because the film is just wonderful in its storytelling and the tragic displays are best left for those who will watch the film.

Roman Polanski had a particular interest in this project because he is actually a Holocaust survivor and hid in a Polish farmer's barn until the end of the war - only then being reunited with his father, who nearly died in the concentration camps.

Nearly 1400 people tried out for the lead role and Polanski didn't like any of them. He finally found Adrien Brody who just kills it in this movie. This surprised me because for whatever reasons I didn't really rate him as an actor up to this point.

You see, Władysław Szpilman is no hero. He's actually quite a coward, he is not a fighter and gets by on the generosity of others and sometimes just wild luck. The continuous tragedy that he faces is truly heartbreaking and this is compounded by the fact that this movie is based on real events and Władysław Szpilman is a real person.

I believe this is about as close to perfect as a movie can be. It is an emotional true story that is just beautifully done. I believe this is the best movie about Nazi Germany and the Holocaust in existence.

The script of the movie, the route and the actor's sport conveys the entire horror of the Holocaust with such convincingness, as if all the ones concerned on this movie have been themselves individuals on this lethal persecution. likely i will never be able to look at this film a second time, but he will constantly be within the rating of the number one films. a whole lot of films are being shot about the second global battle. these types of movies are heavy and difficulty to complaint, it's like strolling on the razor's area, but this film in all its shades makes us recall and keep in mind that humanity must move humanely. Frankly, it by no means settles on your head that during such inhuman situations you may live to tell the tale and hold to live.

This film is one of those that produce an indelible impression and a deep emotional experience. The film, which once looked, does not have the strength to watch the second one, because of a lack of mental strength, since all the insides rake out the first viewing, after which the impressions last for life. In my opinion, this is the best role of Adrien Brody, in which he showed all his acting talent.

I've fallen into the same trap as you with the title. After reading your post, I'll go grab myself a copy and give it a go. Thanks!

The movie's trailer is seems very impactful. The things that happened during Nazi Germany was not just brazen brutal but it in way affected the future generations think about things.
A movie that is based on Nazi's with such great reviews will surely be on my bucket list for things to do this weekend.

The Pianist tells the story of such a man in war time Poland, played by Adrien Brody, who from start to finish sees his life literally getting worse and worse and worse- starts off with new rules from the Nazis, then the stars on the arms, followed by the Warsaw ghetto, and while there he could play in the restaurant, that too soon ended, as the trains arrived and took his family and anyone else he knew away. During this he narrowly escapes, and from then on the film in a sense almost becomes not exactly a holocaust film, but more like a cross of that as the element and the basic structure of something a-la in Cast Away: this includes stretches of scenes showing Brody simply trying to keep out of view of the Germans, either in a small apartment provided by helpful Polish Christians/Jewish resistance, or as a scavenger in the abandoned sections of the ghetto, all while feeling the old rhythm of the piano in his head and fingertips.

This is the kind of magnificent filmmaking that shows a director not only being as true to the story given to him (that of Painist Szpilman, based on his autobiography) but to his past as well- Roman Polanksi faced similar conditions as a boy in the early 40's, and has found the best line to show, never crossed or mis-stepped, in representing the characters and the period. There aren't any hints of tightened suspense, no clues as to where the film could veer to, it just is. The big difference to be seen between a film like this and Schindler's List is not just in the people and situations (Schindler's List was a film about two people, Schindler and Goeth, in the foreground while the Pianist is a total first person tale), yet also in the filmmaking qualities being here surely European. And while the accents on the Polish-Jewish actors sounds a bit too British, that is quite forgivable considering the scope of the project (thank heavens he didn't put in English speaking Germans).

In conclusion, Brody turns in a superb performance, and this indeed is in with Polanski's best, a deserved of 2002's Palme D'Or. Great music too. A+
