My kids love yogurt. So do I. Now, as someone transitioning to an off-gird homesteading and zero-waste lifestyle, I recognize the best way to consume yogurt is to make it or source it locally from true grass fed free-range cows or goats. Sure, I get that and I wholeheartedly agree. And in due time my family will do that. We have from time to time when we were able. Currently we cannot. We are limited on funds, transportation and resources as we make this transition with what is available to us now.

Our ultimate aim is to grow, forage, hunt and source all of our food locally and ethically, organic and non-gmo. For now, we shop at supermarkets and what farmers market we can find in the area. One of the things we do to reduce our waste and negative impacts on the environment as well as our health and well-being is to find the healthiest, most ethical and closest to zero-waste products we can in the store. Unfortunately the best choice within our reach at present is Walmart. I know, I know...

Nonetheless, I think we do a pretty good job and one of my intentions throughout this blog and on my podcasts is to share our experiences and knowledge with you so that you too may do the best you can if this sort of lifestyle is what you desire. It is actually much easier than you think. As a matter of fact, one of the areas I've personally specialized in is teaching and coaching this lifestyle to those living on extremely moderate income including SNAP, welfare and SSI and SSDI recipients as well as the homeless and mentally ill. My family did it while living in a suburban apartment for almost five years and so can you!

So here's what we do as far as consuming yogurt is concerned. Some might say you can live without it, my children really like it and I do not wish to deny them something if there is a good option. In the image Above you see empty containers of Yoplait's Oui non-gmo yogurts. They come in numerous delicious flavors and the ingredients are the best I've seen out of all brands available at most supermarkets. The containers are glass, therefore nontoxic and biodegradable and totally reusable and recyclable. Since we don't like to recycle if we don't have to, we wash them and keep them around; the labels remove very easily.

Firstly, they make excellent drinking glasses as well as shot glasses. My wife and I drink our homemade moonshine out of them during my music podcasts. They make a particularly pleasant clinking sound! LOL. The kids love them because they are small and easy to handle and keep them from pouring too much of any beverage. We also keep the lids, which are foil and can be used to put what yogurt is left back in the fridge or with whatever you put in them.

The other thing I started using them for, which you see in the image above is traps for fruit flies. It's simple. Just fill it with apple cider vinegar about two thirds of the way. I actually use the vinegar and orange peel solution I make for cleaning, bugs love that stuff and it smells nice! Seal the foil lid back on the top, I don't even use tape, just my fingers. Then use a small nail or tack to poke a bunch of holes through the top. Make sure the holes are big enough for the bugs to crawl in. And voila!

I have about four of these placed around our kitchen area. Since we live in a 12x32 house and are very much open to the outdoors we tend to get a lot of bugs. Most of them aren't a bother but fruit flies and fungus gnats are pretty gross and annoying. And now very easy to gt rid of.

I did think of some other uses for these glass containers. If you can think of anything I haven't please comment or make a post of your own, with pics, and tag me and #ghsc so we can share ideas, bounce them around and grow and learn together. Here is a list of what I thought of:

  • Candle holders
  • Ashtray - My wife collects her joint roaches in one.
  • Arts & crafts supplies
  • random small hardware
  • Snacks at home or for travel
  • Soap dish
  • Diffusion for scented oils
  • Loose change
  • Travel cups
  • Glass bricks for earthship style construction
  • Cut them down to the base for tiles

good stuff bud. I plan on living in place without a trash service for the first time in my life soon and can use all the tricks to reduce waste as I can get.

Our entire species must cease using landfills and should really start reducing how much recycling we do. It's literally killing us and the entire eco system. Ive done so much studying and research in this area that I'm not even up for debating it.
