The British Firebox store, which has put on the market what it calls spreadable gin, or gin tonic jam. The ingredients are sugar, lemon, gin, quinine (the dominant aroma of tonic water) and citric acid.
It has to be said that most of the alcohol in the gin evaporates during cooking, so that getting drunk with jam remains rather unlikely. But it is the spirit that counts, right?
According to its inventors, gin tonic jam is excellent in cucumber rolls (Which. Orrore.) or even spread on bread and used in the kitchen, for example in a good tart.
Unfortunately, the jam is not currently being shipped to Italy, but it is worth noting and escorting during the next trip across the Channel.
