Because they allegedly distract the boys, girls are no longer allowed to wear leggings at a US school. They find the ban unfair and defend themselves on Facebook and with a petition against the dress code.
The girls are angry, their parents are shocked: At the Middleschool in Evanston, Illinois, girls are not allowed to wear leggings. This prohibits the dress code of the school. The reason for the rule: The tight pants would distract the boys in the school, the teachers argue.
The online dress code goes even further: The hem of shorts, dresses and skirts must be closer to the knee than at the hip. T-shirts and blouses should be long enough to cover the waistline of pants or skirts.
"We were really shocked by this antiquated message to the children," wrote parents Juliet and Kevin Bond in a letter to the director. In an interview with the online magazine "Slate", the student Sophie Hasty tells how the girls feel the teachers' measures: "It's like telling us it's our fault if the boys bother us," she says 13 year old. "We are being punished for something the boys are doing, so my friends and I are really angry." Anyone who appears in school despite having leggings prohibited should wear a bright blue sports shorts. "That's totally humiliating," says Sophie.
The students therefore rebel: In a joint protest, several of them agreed on Facebook and appeared in spite of the ban in leggings. They launched a petition to fight the strict rules, posters were distributed. The boys beat themselves on the side of the girls: They also consider the dress code unfair.
The actions are - at least partially - successful: The ban on the depending on the wearer a little further yoga pants has been repealed, leggings are still prohibited. "But we have not given up at the point," says Sophie Hasty, who wants to wear leggings mainly because they are "most hypoallergenic".
When I was in the school the leggings was in fashion so almost all girls where them. And the boys dont stared at the girls. In my school we never had Dress Regulations. So if a Girl want she can wear a mini Skirt and that happend in my school time but nothing happend. So what is so bad? Maybe the teachers been a bit horny no,no THATS A CHOKE! I had all the time great teachers and I learned a lot. I am thankful for that.
