Trans-Mongolia Adventure: Traversing The World Largest Island And The World Largest Lake In A Russian Army Jeep

in globaladventure •  7 years ago

From the beautiful flower city of Irkutsk, my wife and I travelled about 250 km along the Primorsky Mountains to Lake Baikal. Lake Baikal with a surface area of 31,500 sq. km. is not only the world largest fresh water lake but with a depth of 1673m, it is also the deepest lake world. In fact Lake Baikal is a huge reservoir with 20% of the world’s fresh water. My destination is Olkhon Island which at 71km long and 14.5km wide is the largest lake island in the world.

At Olkhon Island, we stayed at guesthouse in Khuzir Village.

Peschanka Bay used to be a former camp for political and war prisoners. Remains of the old pier can still be seen.

Sagaan-Khushun Cape, a spectacular cliff, the name means white cap in the Buryat language.

Unique steep cliff of Khoboy Cape resembling a sharp fang and Khoboy means fang in the old Buryat language.

Our lunch of Baikal omul fish-soup cooked in open fire

Spectacular scenery at Shunte Cape

Our excursion in the Olkhon Island is made possible by the hardy and sturdy Russian Army Jeep which is able to navigate the tough terrain. The roads are here are earth or sandy roads which are very uneven. In addition, the jeep has to climb up and down steep hills. Overall it was a very bumpy ride with 10 of us including the driver packed in the compact jeep. The discomfort was a small price to pay for us to enjoy the stunning vistas of Olkhon Island and Lake Baikal.

The hero of our excursion, our trusty and rusty jeep

The seagulls at the ferry crossing bidding us goodbye as we leave Olkhon Island.
