GNU social began in 2010 from the GNU FM project and later collaborated with StatusNet software making it what it is today.
Will GNU Social become a popular social network site?
Apparently GNU Social could become a plugin and needs to be seen by the public.
Which is why I am looking into it and sharing what I find.
But you could use it by hosting it on your server or join servers that already are hosting GNU Social.
These are creative and exciting days as the beast system is starving for citizens' support, whose Trust was betrayed by the institutions serving the beast.
We the People are not powerless, we are creative problem solvers!
Starve the Beast by leaving the corporate-government system of control and joining freedom nurturing efforts.
Leave Facebook, Google and Youtube to join freedom nurturing social media platforms and software.
We the People are the change we have been searching for.

Why are we making GNU social?
Well, like many of us, we've used several different social sites over the years. From orkut, to friendster, to myspace and now facebook. Yet, when a new site appears, and everyone flocks to use it, your contacts are left behind, as well as a significant amount of your private and personal information.
Social networks should be evolving, they should allow you to control what you put into them, and you should be able to keep control of your own data, including running the same software that GNU social uses, on your own website.
The web itself is already somewhat social in this regard. emerging standards like FoAF already handle some of the basics for a better way to control your contacts, and GNU social can add some fun features of its own.
GNU social is being created, from scratch, in php for maximum portability.
PHP runs on virtually any web hosting provider we can think of.
We recommend suhosin for added security.

I wish you or some groups start more free source forums and not necessarily an "official" FSF centric forum because I think only the minority are focused on free source software, perhaps we need to broaden our tolerance of those who find value in supporting the beast system to get "seen" and gain exposure for the freedom source movement?

I guess it is possible to start a forum on my website but who would use it?
Also I would like to know why you use term free source instead of free software or free source software instead of floss\foss because I have never seen this before.
As for tolerance well we have it already, open source is tolerant to proprietary software and look where it leads, instead of doing free software people just implement proprietary software inside open source.
But they could make a guide how to migrate from windows to free system because I had some problems and probably other people had them too and that is not what windows user is used to.

I use the phrase "Free Source" because my preference is to have words spell it out clearly what I mean as I focus on "freedom", rather than the ambiguous term "free".
Everyone I've spoken to either use or misuse the phrase "open source" in relation to freedom (as you know) when the phrase "free software" is used I too often had to explain the difference. My focus is on freedom and mass awareness of the truth worldwide, thus technologies and services that nurtures this is embodied in the phrase "free source".
From free knowledge base repositories, to energy sources for the home I wish to nurture grassroots creative freedom. {I've read some real horror stories as homeowners/homesteaders attempted to go off grid, only to face threats from municipalities.}
When I first became interested in the concept in relation to tech and services (about 6 yrs ago) I was inspired from the efforts of Marcin Jakubowski, but even as most tech and schematics can be open sourced many individuals still had no clue of the mental trap of institutional governance to ignore self governance as freedom.
LOL, sometimes I wish Richard Stallman and his friends had coined the phrase "Free Source" then there may have never been a need for the "open source" confusion?
I think the open source momentum and popularity leads many to the use of proprietary tech.
