Seven Keys to Writing That Will Have People Taking Action

There are several types of writing; fiction, non-fiction, sales copy and short ads, just to start with a short list of a few.

For today though, I’m going to talk about writing with the purpose of getting the reader taking action. That action at this moment, isn’t important, you can decide on that later. It’s the concepts I’m going to talk about that are important.

So, here’s a list of seven elements or points to keep in mind when writing effectively.

• 1. Be succinct: one of the biggest mistakes people make when they start to write a book, sales or other action related copy, is they start to get fluff on the brain. They think they need to get fancy, but really, the best thing you can do when writing, is get to the point. Everyone reading is busy. They may want your message, but they want you to get to it quickly.
• 1. Use comparisons & metaphors: Writing without metaphors, is like ordering a Coke float and having the ice cream left out of the glass. You may like to have a Coke once in a while, but the added ice cream dancing and bubbling on your tongue is something everyone should know about.
• 1. Use “if, then” descriptions: When you use a description of something that could be or is an “if,” you’ll find people are able to understand what the expected result is. Example: “If you take the new Ultra-Slim, you’ll be back in a bikini without dieting or exercise. – I can could go on, but I’m going to keep this short, so I hope you get the point.
• 1. WIIFM: “What’s In It For Me?” – Don’t just write with your reader in mind, write from their perspective. Ask yourself when looking at each sentence, “what’s the benefit to my reader?” Be sure there is one.
• 1. Write like you talk: Most of us talk quite directly and simply. Your writing should be the same. When rereading and editing what you’ve written, does it sound like you are talking with a friend? It should and that should be your goal.
• 1. Write in pictures: Think of the dreams you’ve had and how vivid they can be. You feel like you are in the moment, right there in the action, even though you are lying asleep in your warm bed. When you have people automatically picture what you’re writing to them, you will have more success in having them take action.
• 1. Avoid clichés: Using “marketing terms” and/or clichés is one of the things that gets people running for the doors about as fast as any type of writing. If you follow through with the first six elements, avoiding clichés should be easy.
