Are You Achieving Your Goals? Intentions Require Action

in goals •  7 years ago

How many of us actually complete our goals?

In my experience very few people manage to complete all their goals in life, why is that? In my experience, it comes down to intention. Setting an intention is the important first step in setting up a goal.

Unfortunately, most people will fail to complete the goals they create for themselves. Mainly because they have not convinced themselves they are capable of completing the goal.

Due to this lack of intention I often witness at the start, people soon give up. For instance, someone who wants to lose thirty pounds will usually say; I want to lose thirty pounds over the next six months.

When what that person should be saying is; I WILL lose thirty pounds over the next six months.

See that shift in language?

I know it is subtle but it is so important! Language determines our reality; any Cognitive Behavioral trained coach or psychotherapist will tell you this but this advice is often unheeded.

A goal should not be viewed as a constant uphill battle. Yes, there will be roadblocks which may arise, you may have to develop your resilience capacity before you formally begin or develop some positive morning rituals but it’s important to visualize in your head that goal has already been reached.

Ultimately, it is just a matter of completing the process in real life and letting others know that your goal has been attained once you set your intention.

So the next time you decide to set a goal for yourself, change the language you use for yourself, set the intention early and at the start of your endeavor.

I will…is a great way to start any intention in terms of goal setting, make that goal a reality in your mind, then in your behavior.

Absolutely language determines your reality. How you talk to yourself has a huge impact on how you see yourself and what you expect from yourself. You set yourself up for success or failure in anything by the way you see your objective and what you say to yourself as you aim for it.

"I'll try," sounds commendable, but it's not. "I'll try" ... contains in the language itself the possibility that you may fail. Yes, to get anywhere at all you have to get off your butt and get in the game. But, "I'll try" virtually screams that you're willing to settle for a "participation trophy" rather than really go for the gold. If things get hard ... well, at least you tried. (sigh) And with that, another dream bites the dust. You can go back to your couch, swill beer and eat Cheetos because ... well, you tried.

"I'm going to make this happen," is so much stronger. It's full of resolve and determination. It's the pep-talk and cheer-leading section you carry with you as you devise ways to achieve your target. It's so much more than a half-hearted decision to "try." It says that if you hit problems, you'll find ways to solve them. If you meet set-backs and opposition, you'll come up with ways to make progress anyway. You'll keep your eye on that finish line and do what it takes to get there.

It reinforces your image of yourself as a resourceful, creative, capable person who can do hard stuff ... and win! That's at least half the battle ... the promise to yourself that no matter what you will not give up until you make good on this goal. And when you prove to yourself that you can do hard stuff, you'll have the faith and courage to tackle hard stuff again ... even harder stuff next time.

It separates the winners from the also-rans. And it starts with the decision to be on your own side ... and to tell yourself that from the get-go. You don't gain ground and you don't become stronger by milling around, taking things easy and "trying" every so often. It would be nice if it did ... and, sure, it's comforting to think life could be easy.

But, seriously ... life is not a spectator sport. Either you're out on the field, on the team, pushing yourself and making it happen ... or you're just a member of the audience -- somebody who tried ... or maybe didn't even get that far. Winners do more than just "try." They do more than come up with ideas. They do more than just wish-and-hope. They do what it takes to move forward. They start by believing they can.

Make this your mantra: I can do this. That alone will make a difference.
