The spirit and the flesh lead us down two different paths, one of blessing and the other of curse. The motivators of those who live according to the flesh are fear and greed, on the other hand, for those who live according to the spirit, the motivators are love and contentment.
Those who walk in the spirit are those who inherit the Kingdom of God, explains the apostle Paul in his letter to the Galatians: "So I say, walk by the spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.", Galatians 5:16-17.
These two paths are subject to the law of harvest and sowing: "Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life", Galatians 6:8
That is why the paths bear fruit, that is, consequences in our life and in the lives of others and these consequences can be individual or social depending on how good or bad they are. This is why conversion is so necessary for the life of man:
"The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissension, factions and envy, drunkenness, orgies and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law"; Galatians 5:19-23.
What Paul is explaining to us is that the flesh contains within itself the death instinct, that is, it is the inclination of life to return to its inorganic state; on the other hand, the spirit is a life drive, it is the life that develops its potential: expansiveness and progressiveness.
