When Jesus testifies about himself, he explains to his disciples, in the temple, that those who are similar to God seek the word of God: "Whoever belongs to God hear what God says", John 8:47.
What does it mean to belong to God? To belong to God means to be like God. The likeness to God can only be in essence, not in substance: "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect", Matthew 5:48.
The essence is the main characteristic of something, while the substance is what is spoken of. For example, the main characteristic of man is the reason, and the substance of man is the person. Instead, the essence and the substance of God is wisdom.
We belong to God when we are born of the spirit, that is, when God changes our essence and imprints wisdom in our hearts:
"Jesus replied: ´Very truly I tell you, no one can see the Kingdom of God unless they are born again´.
How can someone be born when they are old? Nicodemus asked.
´Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother's womb to be born!´
Jesus answered: ´Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying: ´You must be born again´. The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the spirit´". John 3: 3-8
Wisdom, which is the knowledge of the correct means of living, has two paths: experience and inspiration. When wisdom is inspired this is the word of God. The word of God is wisdom engendered by the gift of counsel: listen (perceive with attention), meditate with intuition and inspiration, decide with discernment.
Those who share his spirit, that is, his wisdom with God are one: "But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit", 1 Corinthians 6:17. Those who belong to God, sharing his essence, seek his wisdom to receive eternal life and the fruits of the spirit. This is the true goal of spiritual life and the blessed life.
