Life and creativity of Honore de Balzac / part 5/

in godflesh •  7 years ago  (edited)

From 1837 until the end of his life the French writer managed to finish another 23 novels. Meanwhile, he tries his chances in the theater and is tempted to get his own printed body - the "Paris Magazine", which only existed in three pieces. The novels that Balzac creates at the end of his life are particularly welcomed by the readers. Among them are ", "Cousine Bette" and "Le Cousin Pons" (. Not less successful are the novels "One Dark Affair", "The Memoirs of Two Bridegirls" and "The majesty and the fall of the courtesans". In these remarkable works of Balzac, the sunset of a world that before the age of Romanticism enchants readers with its two manifestations - with a clear face, as bright as a day, and hidden revels, mysterious like the night, is foretold. In the recent novels of "Human Comedy" in the world in which the novelist introduces us, there is a creeping darkness that obstructs both individual entrepreneurship and the public responsibility of state institutions.

Having mastered the art of the novel, Balzac mounts a superbly acting body of novels, exploring, divided into three parts, the mores, the human nature and institutions (especially marriage). In a contract that was signed in 1841, the title "Human Comedy"" appeared. In 1842, Balzac composes the preface of the all-embracing novel series, which clarifies its organization and expounds its writing strategy. It was only in 1845 that the novelist had published the complete comic book catalog: 137 novels, nearly 2,000 actors (46 novels were assigned with their project titles but the author did not manage to develop them). As early as 1834, Balzac clarified the plan and chose the headlines for the parts of the all-embracing novel series. He decides that it should consist of three parts, entitled "Study of the mores", "Etudes philosophiques" and "Analytical research")

When in 1835 the French novelist sought a title for the series of novels, he decided to name it with the explanatory title "Social Studies". It was only in 1842 that he hunted at the title "Human Comedy" and for a long time worked on the preface to the series in which he presented his concept and his creative intentions to the readers. The chosen title, which gives the novelist an extraordinary research ambition, reminds readers that the world is a difficult-to-see theater in which people perform, well or badly, some role before moving to the afterlife. The title suggests that the author intends to build a wide-ranging fictional model that reproduces truthfully the philosophy of the vast life theater and reveals its complex and dynamically changing conventions, the novelist committed to dismantling the mechanism of the theater of life and to show his hidden springs, wheels, and transmissions. According to Balzac's original design, "Morbid Studies" should present "all social consequences", outlining the "history of the human soul by dismembering its every fiber." Then, in "Philosophical Studies", the reasons for "the feelings and passions, the foundations on which life is built" must be revealed.
