The Future of Genesis/Core Card Prices

in godsunchained •  5 years ago  (edited)

This week in Gods Unchained, free activation is currently underway for those who purchased Genesis packs/chests so I felt like this article seemed appropriate with open market just around the corner! Note: The following is not financial or professional advice. When it comes to buying, selling, or holding your cards/chests, do what you feel is best for you. These are simply my opinions.

With only 6 million Genesis cards that will ever be printed, they will inherently hold additional value over future expansions which will not have such limits. Over time, cards will become more scarce as some people choose to fuse their duplicates into higher rarity copies which in turn destroys their old copies. If you wanted to created a Shadow version of a Meteorite for instance, you'd have to destroy 5 Meteorite copies in the process so overall there would be a loss of 4 cards from the total amount of Genesis cards in exchange for creating one.

Let's assume for a minute that everyone was to fuse 5 of their Meteorite copies into one Shadow. The overall supply of Genesis cards would drop all the way down to 1.2 million cards! That most likely won't happen, but over time as people fuse their Genesis cards the overall number of them will drop. If the law of supply and demand holds true, then as they become more scarce then their prices will rise assuming the demand stays the same!

In addition to fusing, there will be other factors that determines a card's price. One of the main ones being the current meta at the time. In line with supply and demand, if a card is highly sought after for a competitive deck then more people will be looking to buy it thus increasing it's price. This will even be more relevant if the card in question is a Genesis card due to supply.

Other factors that will increase card prices will have to do with what I call "milestones" for the game. All of these revolve around how much people are interested in playing the game. The more people that are actively playing Gods Unchained, the higher the demand for cards will be. These milestones will be (but certainly not limited to): launch, tournament, mobile launch, and credit/debit card payment integration. The easier the game becomes to play for your everyday, more casual player, the more the demand for cards will be.

I haven't talked much about core cards yet, so let me discuss my thoughts on those briefly. Unlike Genesis cards, core cards can be earned from leveling up and there's no set limit on how many cards there will be. Even though core packs can be earned, it doesn't mean that you'll open those last few cards you'll need for that awesome new meta deck. Add that to the fact that currently the core set is stronger on average overall then the Genesis set and you can see why people will be looking to buy them as well as Genesis cards. As the milestones that I spoke about previously are hit, they will also affect the price of core cards as well.

Great first post!!!!

I'm super excited to see what happens with GU.
Some great points you bring up about the deflationary aspect of the card supply.
I think early adopters that are grinding it out now will be in a good position later on.
Great job on your first post, and welcome to the Steem blockchain! :)

Welcome! Keep in mind the Evolution system will also serve as a card sink, reducing the quantity of cards further. I'm not sure if the evolution system will include Genesis cards, though.
