Musa Keita I was a 14th-century ruler of the African empire of Mali and probably the richest man on the planet. Mali was known for its richness of natural resources, especially gold. The yellow metal was actively mined in the country long before the era of Musa Keita I.
He became king in 1312, and his title – Mansa – means 'supreme ruler'. As Europe was suffering from famines and civil wars, African states prospered and reached the pinnacle of their power.
During his time as Mansa, Musa Keita I greatly enlarged the state, annexing Timbuktu and restoring influence over Gao. The empire stretched for almost 2 thousand square miles, covering the territory of present-day Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Chad, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria.
Mali's economy was based on trade with North Africa along the trans-Saharan caravan routes. The main goods being sold were salt and gold.
The world learned about the Malian ruler's immense fortune in 1324, when Mansa Musa went on a pilgrimage to Mecca, crossing a distance of four thousand miles. Hajj was expensive in those times, and sources say that the Mansa's caravan stretched beyond the horizon. He was accompanied by tens of thousands of soldiers, servants and slaves, as well as many horses and camels loaded with gold bars.
When the caravan made a stop in Cairo, the ruler spent and distributed so much gold that he provoked a wave of inflation that took several years to curb.
This 'golden' voyage placed Mansa Musa on the famous Catalan Atlas – one of the most important medieval maps, created in 1375.
A curious fact: in 2012, the website Celebrity Net Worth recalculated the fortune of various famous people from the past in today's money. Musa Keita's wealth was valued at $400 billion, making him the richest man who had ever lived, ahead of the Rothschilds and Rockefeller.
