The events surrounding the disappearance of the treasure date to the fist half of the 16th century. The chronicles of that time were not very precise or detailed, which led to the emergence of several versions of how the gold was moved around and buried. One thing that's known for certain is that it belonged to the Aztecs, a rich people led by Montezuma II. His nemesis was the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortez.

The Aztecs viewed the Europeans as demigods. Montezuma welcomed the Spaniards with great honors, but the guests abused his hospitality, searching the whole palace for valuables. They found the secret spot where a vast fortune was amassed, but they didn't have any practical way to send it home to King Charles V. So the Spanish closed the secret room again; Cortez left an officer of his to take care of business in Tenochtitlan and went on to search for other treasures. However, he was forced to return when the soldiers of the Cuban governor Velasquez, who envied Cortez' successes.

Some history books say that Cortez managed to load all of Montezuma's gold onto ships, but a shower of Aztec arrows sent them to the bottom of an artificial lake. However, Arizona Indians tell stories of a long caravan of carriers who headed for a mountain pass dividing the valley from the Colorado river. They were guarded by warriors with spears. Nobody saw them return.

In the 20s, Utah gold prospector Freddy Crystal found an engraving on a cliff, looking like an ancient map pointing to the location of a treasure. He contacted a distant descendant of Montezuma, who confirmed that the engraving could indeed point to the place where the Aztek gold had been buried.

Crystal managed to convince some locals to help search for the gold. However, the only thing they found was a complex system of caves and tunnels with lots of traps. There was no trace of the treasure.
