The apostle Paul tells us about putting Jesus above all things in his epistle to the Colossians. Paul had already made his three missionary journeys spreading the doctrine of the Kingdom of Heaven among the pagans, and the apostle found himself facing a problem similar to the one that occurred in the Antioch incident (Galatians 2:11-14) with the doctors of the law and Sadducees converted to the faith; the new converts brought their philosophical ideas and tried to subordinate faith to strange pagan philosophies. These heresies (that is, teachings of error), disguised as philosophy, threatened the unity of the Church, the communion of the believers.
Let us remember that Gnosticism was widespread in the times of the primitive Church and this worldly philosophy had been mixed with Christianity giving rise to Gnostic Christianity, a philosophy that affirmed that faith was not enough, and that Gnosis was needed to achieve the inner enlightenment of the consciousness and the spiritual salvation.
Paul reminds us that Jesus is the "son of man" and the source of all wisdom from above, there is no way to achieve spiritual enlightenment through esoteric practices as many pagans claimed, but through constancy and firmness in faith, as also Jesus explained with his grace of wisdom: "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it" Luke 11:28.
This is how the apostle Paul tells us how we should live to please God, and lead a life worthy of being called Christian:
"So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human traditions and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ" Colossians 2:6-8.
