Graphics card down

in gridcoin •  7 years ago

My graphics card, The gtx 970 was bought just before Christmas and installed by professionals at Best Buy into a new computer.

It was running the GridGrind part of boinc and as of last week stopped.

The boinc manager said that it couldn't find my graphics card, so I rebooted everything. I then made sure everything was updated and same propblem.

I've also discovered that my iclone and hitfilm programs could no longer access the gpu rendering.

I've scoured google and I've come across nothing that helps me... some might but they talked in a computer language that's still beyond my understanding.

So I'm looking for ideas.

Go to a device manager (windows, "This Computer"->"Manage") and see if the GPU is still detected by system. If it is, then it is a software problem. If not, look for burnt stuff on the physical gpu board.

Switch to projects that only use CPU. A couple of years ago I destroyed my GPU and I gave up to BOINC. Now I'm back because of the gridcoin. I hope I can earn so much gridcoin to afford a new GPU :)

Yup. That's what I've been running with it.

Seriously hoping the gpu isn't destroyed.

Are you on Windows? Maybe boot Ubuntu Linux from a memory stick and see if it starts the graphic card.

I'm on Windows. I'll take a look into Linux.

Could you please just post a photo of how is your pc connected to the monitor? if you are using the monitor plugged to the card then it is working just fine.

Keep in mind that you need to have it connected to something (even if its a vga dummy) for it to start, And that sometimes you just need to unplug and plug again in the pci slot (this is very easy to do)

I think it is quite likely BOINC its at fault here. Uninstall and install again. Do the same with the nvidia drivers.

I'll Post a picture in comments below. But yup, the monitor is plugged directly into the Graphics card in the computer. It seems to be working just fine.

I'm going to try the uninstalling and reinstalling thing now, I didn't even consider that. I try to avoid things like that because of how slow my internet is but it's looking like the best option right now.

Check the GPU is connected properly, that the power connectors haven't melted/fried & that the motherboard hasn't fried near the GPU.

Clean out any dust that's clogging the GPU, monitor your temps and update your GPU drivers.

If within a year, try to get a refund/exchange?
