howto: If you do NOT get any new blocks in Gridcoin ...

in gridcoin •  8 years ago  (edited)

THIS IS STILL BEING EDITED:

do NOT USE until this very first line is removed

If you do NOT get any new blocks (A), I'd recommend:

a) you restart the Gridcoin client a few times, like this:

  1. restart wallet and wait 30 mins

  2. no new block? restart again + wait 30 mins

  3. repeat step 2 how often you want

b) If no new block:

  1. consider using the snapshot (more secure is the !bootstrap, see also: !bootstrap advantage), see (B), AND

  2. a new addnodes list

c) If you're unwilling to use the snapshot, you should sync from 0. (C)

Please feel free to share your experience about this in:

  bugtracker, twitter, or irc

(A) this is most likely because your client is connected to nodes which give you "wrong" blocks and your 3.5.8.7 node does not accept those

(B)

snapshot howto:

  1. get the archived snapshot file (this should bring you up to block #853500)

  2. close Gridcoin

  3. navigate to your data dir: e.g. for windows: %appdata%\GridcoinResearch and for linux: /home/your_user/.GridcoinResearch/

  4. delete everything, except: gridcoinresearch.conf, wallet.dat and walletbackups folder

  5. make also sure that your .conf file has uptodate Gridcoin nodes on top, working one is: ormgas.com

e.g. in linux you can also start your Gridcoin with: ./gridcoinresearch -maxconnections=1 -connect=ormgas.com

if you want, you should also delete your peers.dat file now (info about past nodes you connected to will now be gone)

KEEP IN MIND: this is a personal server and it may get full, also: ormgas is not an official server

We are in progress to get nodes listed which provide you blocks from the A chain, see LATER here) (or !addnodes) )...

  6. now is also a good time to do a backup of the files from step4

  7. extract the snapshot/bootstrap file to folder from step3

  8. launch the Gridcoin client

  9. make sure in your peer list that only 1 peer appears

  10. how long does it take ? depends on CPU (4h on Intel Core i5-7200U 3.1 GHz, import: single-thread, and nothing intensive on processor elsewise)...

  11. when the snapshot/bootstrap was imported, check with !verify if all goes in the right direction

  12. once all seems fine, please set your connections (maxconnections) to the normal value please

the terms above starting with ! (e.g. !bootstrap) are commands the fediverse bot accepts in irc

(C)

sync from zero:

  1. start the Gridcoin wallet with admin rights (admin rights are required only under Windows)

  2. Go to menu: "Rebuild Block Chain" > "Download Blocks"
