projects that cause your pc to bsod

in gridcoin •  7 years ago  (edited)

Im testing my theory that certain projects my pc doesnt like to run, im currently crunching: moowrapper, seti, enigma and milkyway. Before i was running a bunch more but i want to see if this will solve my BSOD problem as i have crunched a bunch of moowrapper with no problems and wanted to work on more projects, yes for GRC but also for others benefits. Have you any overclocks? In theory if you are running at stock speeds then you should not get any BSODs with any type of BOINC project.
On my core i7-6700k Im pushed to 4.36Ghz and I have really nice air cooling, so it seems to work alright, very occasionally I get some BSODs but really its not frequent enough for me to bother trying to troubleshoot.

It is oc trying to figure out how to get it down as i bought it already oc, dounds like the prob though

If you bought it from a store recently then complain, it should not BSOD. If you bought it second-hand then you probably need to enter the BIOS and change the CPU multiplier, Im not an expert but if you google overclocking for your hardware, you should be able to reduce the speed a bit.

Gotcha, i dont like overclocking too much, i just figure if the guy i got it from had it working as such it was good to go

BOINC can push your PC pretty hard. In general, if you get BSODs when running BOINC, it's recommended to run some CPU and memory tests, because your machine is probably generally unstable, but it shows only under heavy loads. Truly stable machines can run BOINC for months without any glitches-

What software do you suggest to test with?

I recommend LinX v0.7.0
http://www.mediafire.com/file/g0evl5p5a4puw4u/LinX+v0.7.0E+%282017.1.014%29.7z

For initial testing, choose at least half your RAM, all cores. If it's stable for at least 30 mins, run another test with just 256 MB RAM, all cores.

Thanks!

Can you give full hardware details in the post plus full OS first :) ?
Then you are getting my upvote and resteem and maybe even potential solve :)
So CPU, MB (Manufacturer & Model), RAM (Manufacturer & Model), etc.

Cheers,

Can you reset bios to defaults (including clock settings) and get back on BSOD ? Increase of temperature when you abuse 2 old tech cores overclocked a bit, on a newest technologies on multi-computing/tasking base, gets a bit buggy as well. If it's clean i suggest Bios Reset to Defaults and get back on BSOD reply.

Cheers

Btw, very nice old school setup and i love it, just ram would be much smoother if Geil was inside. 2 x 8GB :)

Will do, its been running good for over five hours now :) was waiting to see if it BSOD as much before i reset and the MB can only handle 8gb

In my experience, heat is usually the problem in cases like this. CPU temps that are too high, will cause instability. Make sure the CPU and system fans are working and are reasonably dust free. If heat is the issue, a better heatsink/fan or a good cleaning and reapplication of thermal compound may solve the problem.

Heat stays under 150 Fahrenheit according to iobit temp checker, i have six fans, and a room fan and its open box as closing it is only good when gaming
