Today, I got my Gold Badge for my contribution on the FightAIDS@Home - Phase 2 project, enabled by the World Community Grid initiative.
FirstAIDS@Home is a major project on the World Community Grid, started back in the 2005. The first phase of the project is considered to be the biggest docking experiment ever conducted with more than 20 billion drug-target comparisons performed, while the second phase of the FirstAIDS@Home, started in September 2015, uses a more precise simulation method to validate and further refine the virtual screening results that were generated in Phase 1.
According to the most recent data from the World Health Organization, there are currently about 36.7 million people living with HIV (the Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infections, two million people are newly infected and over a million die from the disease each year. However, not all infected persons are developing AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), a spectrum of conditions in which the virus interferes so much with the immune system, increasing the risk of common infections.
World Community Grid, is using the huge computational power donated by volunteers joining the distributed network, for various research projects. In addition, volunteers joining the Gridcoin team (link to a tutorial), are rewarded with GRC crypto-tokens, highly valuable cryptocoins, currently trading at $0.16:

Congratulations and thanks for being my "passive" advisor for Gridcoin! As semi-old SETI cruncher, I joined Gridcoin almost a month ago (26 days to be more exact, out of which my main host was online for 20 days ) reaching a magnitude of 8 and an estimated reward of 2 GRC per day. Not bad at all for average specs (6 years old Phenom II X6 with 2X ancient Radeon R7 200 series and 2 mid-range android phones)! In regards of cryptocurrencies, I only care about Gridcoin and I found the energy waste behind other coins deeply immoral. I'd like to sit and chat someday whenever you get to Vienna or Timisoara... The wine is on me :)
