Hi !

What a ridiculous few days!

When it rains it pours, that’s for sure.

I hope your week has been fantastic!

It’s been windy here, 130km/h winds along the coast again.

Proof of this here👇🏻

Honestly, you hardly notice it after a little while of living here.

When I was a child, many of the old traditional soap box style houses on the island had very poorly insulated windows. When we would get high winds, they’d shriek and howl all night. It should probably seem creepy to me, but honestly when the wind picks up now I sometimes miss those sounds.

I can remember many nights staying up late, playing cards at the kitchen table with my grandmother by candlelight, while the wind howled and rattled the house. The old wood stove ensured we were very warm and snuggly inside. My faithful dog and my Nan’s cat curled up in front of the hearth fast asleep. It was a very comforting place to be.
She was a wonderful woman. Always had a story to tell, and even if some would repeat, as a kid it didn’t matter one bit. I loved it. I would listen to her talk until I eventually fell asleep in my chair at the table, or I’d wander off to the bench across the room, or the couch, and plop down, drifting off happily, often with the sound of her voice above the din, still chatting with herself or her elderly friend at the table.

Now, while I still enjoy those sounds of wind, I’m more thankful this place is so efficiently insulated, it keeps the heat in so well here!!

❤️

After some thought, I decided on my next painting!

It’s going to be a cute little puffin on the side of a cliff with yarrow flowers all around. I’m pretty excited about this one! Hopefully it comes together the way I can envision it! Puffins are one of those animals you might think is straight from someone’s imagination, and getting to see them somewhat regularly in person is a real treat!

A lesser known fact about puffins, they will pick pretty flowers to give to their mates! You’ll sometimes catch a glimpse of a puffin with a mouth full of iris or yarrow flowers, heading home to give to the missus.

I started some more seeds the other day. Some kale, some arugula and some bell pepper plants.

I also have some really old corn seeds I’m trying to sprout.

I have two types I got a long time ago from Baker Creek, one is a giant variety, with huge kernels called Yurackallhua.

And the other is Chapalote, a beautiful, shiny, golden coloured, dry corn.

I’ll start some sweet corn later on for fresh eating, but these ancient varieties are meant for like, Peru, so they’ll definitely need a really long time to grow to maturity here.

Still no eggs from the ducks yet.
My only neighbour is a relative of mine, her hens often make more eggs than she needs and so she sends down eggs from time to time, and they’re absolutely amazing! Rich, dark yellow yolks that hold up well in the frying pan. Thick shells that split perfectly down the middle. All signs of healthy, happy chickens! Which they definitely are because they’re very much a part of her family and treated as such.

Can’t wait to start my own brood!! 💕
I’m holding off until early spring, I plan to have my coop finished and ready by then. Still working out the design now. I have some sketches but haven’t fully decided on some aspects. As I had mentioned before, with the cost of lumber still high, and my love of living off the land, I wish to use logs from the forest to build much of the animal’s housing and fencing, which takes a little more thought and planning.

I hope you’re keeping warm this winter! I know out west it’s been a brutal one so far, -40°C for weeks now. We sit around the zero mark here for much of the winter, and had a temperature of +8°C the other day.
😎

NO COMPLAINTS FROM ME!!
😂
Good riddance to Alberta winters!!!

❤️

Take care everyone!!

Some memes for ya:

Can’t wait indeed!

Knotilus daily pond is a series of photos of the pond near my home, some bloggery about the homestead and the creations, it’s then finished off with some choice memes.

Some days here are breathtaking, others will be gray, I’m happy to share the different looks of the pond all year long 🙂
