We got our first-ever chickens 6+ weeks ago, and I just love ‘em!

We bought two different varieties online: light brahmas and white Plymouth rocks. They are fine looking birds, if you ask me.

We went with a Brahma mainly for their size (14-18 lbs.) and they are good for cold winters (short combs and feathered feet.)

We wanted a second variety and thought the Plymouth Rock would be a good duel purpose to experiment with.

Did you notice the bigger chicken in the first photo?

We started out with 25 chicks in our garage. Then when the coop was up, we moved them out there. Well, one night we had some high winds. We didn’t have the coop locked, and wouldn’t you know it, the winds unlatched the doors! Combine an open coop with no surrounding fence, and you’ve got a dog ready to have unsupervised play time.

Needless to say, Chester was in big trouble! I was told it was a blood bath..however, one managed to hide from the predator and pulled through.

We think it’s a rooster. Does it look like a he? It’s 7ish weeks old.

The fence is up now. Chester still keeps his eyes on those chickens though!

I see he’s starting to kill the grass from running around the fence scaring those chickies.

I can’t wait to see them all full grown, and the kiddos sure love checking up on them every day! I will keep you updated as the season goes on.

Your big white one is definitely a rooster! Clever boy, escaping the blood bath.

Thank you for your input! We figured so, but wanted to ask someone who knows more about chickens :) We May keep him around a little longer because he was so fortunate!

howdy there @hebrewhousewife! you guys have some fine looking chickens there, Chester likes em too! Chester is great! good luck with those chickens, interesting that the one type has insulation for their feet, perfect for up there! here's our dog Jack:jack (1).jpg

Thank you! I had no idea all the variation of chickens that are out there until we started shopping around. I love the feathered feet! It makes them unique.
Jack and Chester look like they could be brothers! How old and how big is he? Chester is a year old and is around 80ish lbs.

howdy back again @hebrewhousewife! yes, the variety is mindblowing, when we were getting ready to move to Texas some years ago we researched chickens but never got them because when we got here we started talking to the locals about them and come to find out they attract snakes big time.
and we have been killing snakes ever since we got here so we have enough of that problem thank you.
Just awhile ago a friend of ours went to get eggs and there was a Copperhead where the eggs were supposed to be! no thanks, we've heard so many stories like that. plus they attract coyotes and we've got lots of problems with them already also.

but anyway Jack is almost 2 years old now and weighs about 72 pounds, really trimmed down in this heat, in this weather he'll go for a couple of days not eating a thing.

Sorry to hear about your little misfortune, but the other chickens are looking very good. We have never raised either of these breeds, so I will be interested in seeing them as they get older.

Thank you, they are doing really well. Before we were getting interested in getting chickens, I hadn’t heard of any kind of breed. Lol. When I think of a chicken, the all white feathered and red comb chicken, like the Plymouth rocks, are what always came to my mind.

OH WOW! Sorry to hear about what happened....hopefully you will have nothing but success going forward!

Yes, it was a sad morning.. now that we have a fence up, I’m hoping all goes well. Should it happen again though, the doggie may need to find a new home..

I guess lesson learned....but yeah if the dog is going to tear the chickens to shreds every chance it get then you do have to decide...the dog or the chickens? Shalom to you!
