The University of Guanajuato (English translation of the name) can be seen from just about anywhere in the city as it towers above the other buildings. The University was founded in 1732 under the name Hospice of the Holy Trinity. After undergoing several name changes, it became Universidad de Guanajuato in 1945.

Today, it has more than 33,000 students (although only a portion of them are in the city on Guanajuato, the rest are at other campuses across the state). About half of the students are taking high-school level programs while the other half are pursuing bachelor's, masters, or doctorate degrees.

This photo was taken from the street. The streets are narrow and this building is massive, so I couldn't fit the whole thing in one picture.

Here's another view from the street, just to the right of the massive stairs.

The architect made sure none of the students would need a gym membership. Once you finally reach the top of the stairs, the people below begin to look like the size of insects.

Before knowing more about Guanajuato University, I was shocked by how young this city's residents were! Given the fact that this University is home to well over 30,000 people (spread across a number of campuses throughout the state) and the fact that Guanajuato just isn't that big, it's no surprise that a lot of the people here are quite young! Even if this campus added just a couple thousand students to the city's population, you'd notice a huge change in demographics!

Definitely looks like quite a work out! If I lived there I think I'd walk around the campus just for excercise; student or not. You've been really inspiring me to go to Mexico the last few days :) Great photos!

I've been seeing a lot of posts about Mexico, and this is the second I've seen about Guanajuato. What brought you to this place?

Also can someone explain what kind of programs high-school kids are taking at the university? I'm curious as to how so many (18,000 based on this article) are taking such programs!

Hola @communitycoin @TangerineTravels
Que bonita es la UG. Jajajajajajaja.
