Scope: In the United States over 38% of all traffic related deaths are attributed to Alcohol. 30% of those deaths are done so breaking the law. This accounts for 28 deaths every day, over 10,000 a year. What have we done to solve this problem?
We have made vehicles way safer, and we have all kinds of regulations to keep drugs and alcohol out of the hands of our youth, and yet we still we see over 19% consumption rates in the 12-20 age group? What additional laws are needed to best address this catastrophic issue?
Above and beyond just the traffic related deaths, over 88,000 people die per year from alcohol related causes, making this the 3rd leading cause of death next to Tobacco and Diet (health). We as a society seem to be perfectly OK with letting individuals self-regulate drug and alcohol use, while at the same time teen alcohol use kills 4,700 each year? The US has the highest death rates from alcohol related accidents compared to other countries as well, including France, who has a legal drinking age of 16?
So do we have a problem with how we as a culture "use" alcohol or is the problem easy access to alcohol? Perhaps a little of both?
Do we hold parents culpable when they leave their liquor cabinets open and unlocked?
Should we ban the sale of Everclear entirely, as it is arguably more dangerous than other variations of alcohol?
Those that haven't or don’t use alcohol of course will never really understand it's existence and use what so ever, so what role do they play in finding a solution?
There are those that safely and legally consume alcohol, and those that don't.
You can draw the parallels yourself, but in order to have an honest debate we have to "all" be honest AND open to the other sides perspective.
