I definitely do see value in being able to shoot accurately at greater and greater distances, but..

The fact that Jerry Miculek can hit a balloon from a thousand yards with a 9mm revolver is mind boggling.

Since Eli Dicken saved all of those lives by taking out the mass shooter from forty yards, I do spend more time training at distance (I still suck at the Dicken drill, in part because most handgun ranges aren't equipped for forty yards).

Still, if you carry for self-defense, and you're aware of the law, and the reality of a lot of self-defense incidents, you understand that there's some truth to the idea that plinking isn't the same as training.

It's impressive if you can group in the A-zone with a handgun from forty yards; but, 99.9% of the time, if you shoot somebody from forty yards, even in hard stand your ground states, you're going to prison for the rest of your life.

The closer the person is to you when you shoot, the more likely it is that you were justified. The further away -- again, even in stand your ground states -- the more it's gonna look like you should have tried to run off before pulling the gun.

At my age, I don't think I'm suddenly gonna take up a new sport, and get into competition shooting. I'm into shooting for self-defense and for fun.

So, yeah, I'm spending more time learning how to be quick, get the shots off accurately at close range, and -- most importantly -- putting myself through firearm retention and grappling training.
