With all the out cry over weapons bans, assault weapons are already banned. By definition an assault rifle is a selective fire rifle. So what is a selective fire weapon you ask.
Selective fire means the capability of a weapon to be adjusted to fire in semi-automatic, burst mode, and/or fully automatic firing mode.
This definition is from the BATFE (Bero of alcohol tobacco firearms and explosives).
By this definition no AR15 or any weapon readily available is an assault weapon.
So any firearm that does not shoot fully automatic or in burst mode, class 3 NFA item(s), is an assault weapon. The national firearms act (NFA) banned the import and registration of fully automatic after May 19th 1986.
Well said, and thanks for the well written article on these specs. It disappoints me so much to see so many people jump the gun on these topics, without doing their own research. The news can be to blame for bringing people's emotional responses to the boiling point, but I digress... The responsibility inevitably falls on the shoulders of the law abiding gun owners to help educate, and alleviate the worries of those ignorant of these facts. The next steps are to see what steps we can take to vet individuals without the mental/emotional capacity and responsibility to own such firearms.
