I have been following and focusing on my sight aiming and control recently and thought I would share a few tips with you guys that I have learn't which has improved my competitive shooting.

  1. Stance
  2. Grip
  3. Sight Picture
  4. Breath Control
  5. Trigger Control
  6. Follow Through

1.Stance – There are 3 different stances, Isosceles, Weaver and fighting stance, I personally chose the weaver position because your weak foot is ahead of your dominant foot and your balance is always maintained as well as it absorbs recoil very well.

2.Grip – There are many types of grips but I shoot with the straight thumbs grips as that has been researched as the best type of grip to be used especially for competitive shooters so that they have the best control over their gun.

3.Sight Picture – Sight picture is something I had the most issues with when I initially started shooting and therefore I started researching, watching videos and practicing as every gun is unique and you should find the “sweet spot or sight picture” on your gun. This can only happen with practice of sight picture and grip which goes hand in hand. Ideally your sight picture should look like the below.

4.Breath Control – There are 4 techniques a shooter can adopt.
• Exhale and Pause
• Inhale and Pause
• Full Exhale
• Breathe Naturally

I choose the breath naturally option as I do not want the extra focus now to be on breathing as I believe this should just come to us naturally, focusing on the other techniques only gets your heart rate up and causes undue stress on a shooter.

5.Trigger Control - One needs good trigger discipline and control. Trigger discipline is the ability to always keep your finger off the trigger unless you are ready to shoot. Trigger control on the other hand is knowing your trigger. Know when you break your shot and focus on squeezing that trigger with the tip of your index finger without moving your sights too much and break the shot.

6.Follow Through – Follow through is basically combining all the above steps which forms part of making that initial shot and getting back exactly to where you started and maintaining.

Thanks for reading and I will continue to share tips that I learn through research and practice.

Sweet stuff my man. Those are really the only gun control that needs to exist lol. Question for you: I am right hand dominant for gross motor skills but left eye dominant. I have to manipulate a rifle off of my left side, but I can use a pistol right handed and it works really well. I can hold the pistol in my right hand and that allows me to brace my shooting arm across my body which is pretty stable. Is it at all advisable to shoot long guns with my left hand and pistols with my right (left eye both times)?

Hey Bud, I guess it all boils down to what you are comfortable with. It varies from person to person, the post above is only what I found that suits me, you may have a different style that suits you so in my opinion if you find something working for you then stick to it. I would personally force myself to use my right hand for long guns and left eye if that was my dominant eye. It all gets better with practice.
