As a human there is really only one non-rewnewable resource and that’s time.

If you’re following along I have a couple professional projects, a couple projects I’m writing about here ( #noloafingmoney and #noloafingloseit) and all the normal life stuff.

So how am I finding the time?

Well discipline and habits.

In fact as I’m going through my getting smaller project the first few months you are likely not going to see a lot of the typical scale victories; instead I’m setting the ground work of new habits.

December is an especially hard time to start new projects, there are so many things happening all at the same time, but I'm hoping this will help me keep it REALLY, REALLY small. That is one of the tips from James Clear.

Habits are a Superpower

If I learned anything from reading Atomic Habits by James Clear it’s that habits are a superpower. Trying to get everything done that you want to get done is hard, especailly if you have to always use mental energy to decide what to do next. For me that's where habits come in.

Instead of needing to think about what comes next, you do it, no thinking needed.

As part of my #noloafingloseit project I'm planning to finish off the year building a habit stack for the morning that will put me on the right foot for the rest of the day. I don't know what it will look like yet, but it will have some movement, protein and mindfulness for sure.

I'm also re-reading Atomic Habits to remind myself of some of the better tips that are in there. get myself in the right frame of mind to get all this done.

What are some habits that you have built recently that are helping you be the person you want to be?

The main atomic habits-inspired change I have made -

  • I catch the train to work. My nearest station is Kings Cross, which is less than five minutes' walk.
  • From Kings Cross I have to change at Town Hall to get to my destination.
  • I can walk to Town Hall in about 20 minutes. I now do this every morning.

This means I -

  • walk more
  • don't have to change trains (which is annoying)
  • leave about 10 minutes earlier so this takes away from time I would otherwise be just 'loafing' on the sofa
  • can use the walking time to listen to podcasts about things I’m interested in.

I also do a similar thing on my way home.

Awesome.

It's amazing how a couple of simple changes can help with so many goals in life, and by looking at yourself as the person you want to be, not become, it helps reduce mental friction on all your decisions.
