What is Penetration Testing?

Penetration testing can be defined as a legal and authorized attempt to locate and successfully exploit computer systems for the purpose of making those systems more secure.

Penetration testing is also known as:

  •  Pen testing
  • PT
  • Hacking
  • Ethical hacking
  •  White hat hacking
  • Offensive security
  • Red teaming.

What is White Hat Hacking?

The term "white hat" is an Internet Slang refers to an ethical computer hacker, or a computer security expert, who specializes in penetration testing and in other testing methodologies to ensure the security of an organization's information's system.

What is Black Hat hacking?

A black hat hacker is a hacker who "violates computer security for little reason beyond maliciousness or for personal gain".

Kali Linux

For now, all you need to know is that it is  linux distribution aimed at advanced penetration testing and all the tools we will need for this course are downloaded automaticly in it. (Download it from here https://www.offensive-security.com/kali-linux-vmware-virtualbox-image-download/)

VmWare Workstation

It is where we gonna create our virtual machine,  if you have a 64bit machine download the latest version, if you have 32 bit download the ninth version (I am going to be working on the ninth version).

VmWare Workstation 9: https://my.vmware.com/fr/web/vmware/info/slug/desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_workstation/9_0

(You can go to youtube and search how to download it for free :))

Creating your virtual machine

When you open VmWare workstation click on open a virtual machine and and click on the kali linux image.

(For disk partitioning you dont need it as a beginner.)

(In kali linux you are automatically in super user mode.)

Hope it was of any help!
