Swimming in chlorinated water can strip essential oils from hair. Hair can become brittle and dry, making it prone to breakage and split ends. A variety of treatments, both commercial and at home remedies, can assist with treating dry hair. Experiment with different treatments to find the perfect solution for dry hair.
Rinse Hair Before Swimming
Rinse your hair in a shower before you get in the pool. Hair will absorb water that is chlorine-free and will be unable to absorb as much chlorinated water. Chlorine in water is one of the main reasons hair loses moisture and dries out.
Shampoo Hair
After a swim, use a shampoo specifically made to remove the chlorine from hair. Shampoos made specifically for swimmers include Triswim.
Towel Dry Hair
Squeeze out excess water using a towel and avoid using blow dryers and heated styling tools that can damage hair. Brush your hair with a wide-tooth comb when it is wet or damp---do not use a brush with small bristles.
Olive Oil Deep Treatment
Apply 2 tbsp. olive oil to your hair. Massage the oil into your scalp and use a wide-toothed comb to evenly distribute the olive oil. Wrap your hair in a towel for at least 30 minutes. Keep your hair wrapped overnight for a deeper treatment. Rinse and shampoo twice to remove the oil.
Mayonnaise Deep Treatment
Massage 1/2 cup of mayonnaise into your scalp and hair. Allow the mayonnaise to sit for 10 minutes. Rinse and shampoo twice.
