Chainmail crafting | My brother's attempt to do a house

in handmade •  8 years ago

That's actually decided to share with you - as my older brother almost made a chainmail "shirt" at home. I think it makes no sense to talk about the situation of the workplace that he used to make it, so I'll write everything from his words and attach the photos.

First of all, I of course needed the material itself, from which I made the very "shirt". So I had to take a walk to the nearest building materials store and buy a few coils of wire 100 meters each (wire thickness 0.2 mm). The exact number of wires that I needed to make a chain mail shirt, I can not tell you, tk. I originally chose a weave with a very small diameter, so during the manufacturing process I had to run to the store more than once. That's basically all that I have left from the wire that I bought, and then these leftovers will go to correct small mistakes, as well as to manufacture sleeves.

Actually, for making chain mail, I did not need any special tools, I managed to do this: 2 pairs of pliers, side cutters, well, an ordinary steel pipe that had been lying in the storeroom for a long time. The tube itself did not take pictures; It does not make sense, I can only say that the tube itself was 0.5 mm in diameter.

Then at one end of the tube I made a small hole and in theory I had to wind the entire wire manually. But in order not to wind all the wire manually on the tube, I acted differently. This is a very time consuming and long process. I took an ordinary drill and fixed this tube in the cartridge. Then he took the wire and bent its end, which inserted into the hole in the tube, the other hand held the wire itself and gradually began to wind it on the tube. As a result, because The wire was stiff enough that I got these kinds of "sausages".

Then took side cutters, although it was possible to take scissors for metal and insects from the resulting "sausages" rings.

After I insinuated a large enough pile of rings, I proceeded to weave on this scheme.

Well, then I needed only time and patience, in order to weave pieces of ringlets from which the whole "shirt" was going to collect. Obtained pieces must necessarily be weaved, so that the pattern goes to the side, or else it will be impossible to attach sleeves to the "shirt" - well, this is optional.

Well, actually, what I managed to do in exactly 3 months in my free time. And if I gave this lesson more time, I would have done much faster.

At the moment, I almost finished it, I just had to finish the bottom line, well, and add it and attach the sleeves themselves (although the photo shows that I already started to do one). Next I plan to clean the mail myself to a mirror shine with the paste of the goy.

And by the way, I specially chose such a small weaving, because it will be stronger and more reliable. I even somehow tried to cut it with a small hatchet, but nothing came out just a little scratched, and all because the weaving was done with a tap to the side.
